Men's Swim & Dive Squares Off in Virginia

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's swimming and diving team will close-out the meet portion of its season when the Black Knights travel to Fairfax, Va., for a tri-meet against George Mason and conference foe American Friday, Jan. 22, at 12 p.m.
The meet had been moved up from the original date due to the winter storm that is expected to hit the D.C. area this weekend.
"Dual-meets are a great way to check in and get an objective measurement of the effectiveness of our training," said head coach Mickey Wender. "Performance at these meets is a good barometer of progress, while discovering what needs to be worked on individually. I think collectively, it's a lot of fun to go head-to-head, while traveling around a bit and competing in different facilities. It is sad that this is the last one of the year, but the dual-meet season has been extraordinary, certainly the best in my ten years here."
Army improved to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the Patriot League last weekend with wins over Colgate and Lafayette.
"The wins this season have been a byproduct of the team's consistency and ability to perform steadily, and in swimming and diving that goes a long way," said Wender. "We've had our focus on being best when it matters the most, at the conference meet. From our weight training, dryland, morning workouts and pool workouts, we have stayed the course and stayed consistent. The individuals we have on this team understand what their role is and they execute at a very high level. The quick maturity of our plebe class has been a testament of our success"
The Black Knights started off the meet against the Raiders and Leopards with a first-through-fourth sweep in the 200 medley relay.
Josh Sembrano led the Cadets in sweeps of the 100 back (50.43) and 200 back (1:52.27). Jay Yang was the first-place finisher in the mid-distance events. He was first in the 200 free (1:43.95) and 500 free (4:35.95).
Evin Rude won two events for the Black Knights. He touched the wall in 21.16 in the 50 free and recorded a 51.35 in the 100 fly
The Black Knights have an unblemished 10-0 all-time series record against the Patriots and are 13-1 versus the Eagles.
"It will be a good and competitive match-up for our final weekend of dual-meets," explained Wender. "If we are going to have a successful season, we have to earn it because no one is going to hand it to us."
