Women’s Track Readies for VA Tech Invitational
January 14, 2016 | Women's Track and Field
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's track and field team will compete in its first two-day event of the 2015-16 campaign at the Virginia Tech Invitational from Rector Field House on Friday and Saturday.
"We scheduled this meet because it was a two day meet and gave us an opportunity to get more work in," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "Our first meet was our rust-buster, and now we'll have an opportunity to simulate a conference championship where you might need to run on back-to-back days."
The field of 16 is highlighted Clemson who currently sits at No. 22 in the latest USTFCCCA poll.
The Black Knights competed at the Penn State Relays on Saturday with standout performances from Haley Winters and Payton Padgett. Winters placed sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.38 while also earning a seventh-place finish in the 60-meter dash after completing the spring in 7.86 seconds. She was also a member of the 4x400-meter relay team with Whidney Desormo, Cassie Mundekis and Courtney Dooley that placed sixth with a time of 4:00.75. Padgett was joined by Mundekis, Dooley and Abby Halbrook in the 4x800-meter relay as the youthful squad took home second place with a time of 9:07.29. Padgett also placed seventh in the mile run after crossing the finish line at 5:08.74.
The Virginia Tech Invitational is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. on Friday.
