Women’s Track with Strong Showing at Virginia Tech
January 15, 2016 | Women's Track and Field
Blacksburg, Va. – The Army West Point women's track and field team concluded its first day of competition at the Virginia Tech Invitational from Rector Field House on Friday.
"We scheduled this meet so that we could measure ourselves against some of the top track and field programs in our region," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "Tennessee, Clemson, South Carolina and Virginia Tech are all very strong programs and are particularly good in the speed and power events. Our athletes are wired to rise to the level of our competition and have done a nice job of that so far."
Three top-five finishes highlighted the day for the Black Knights as Madison Hill, Abby Halbrook and Maddie Schneider all had strong showings in their events.
Hill took home the team's top-finish of the day as the runner-up in the 3000-meter run. She finished with a time of 10:03.74.
"This was Madison's first track race since 2014," added Smith. "She went right to the lead and tried to run away with it. She wasn't able to hold on, but she was fearless and that will serve her well down the road."
Halbrook placed third in the mile run, completing the race in 5:03.53. Schneider vaulted her way to a fifth-place finish at pole vault, clearing a height of 3.37 meters.
A pair of seventh-place finishes wrapped up the first day for the Cadets as Cassie Mundekis did so in the 1000-meter run while Briyah Brown reached that place in the weight throw. Mundekis completed the race in 2:54.26, while Brown tossed the 20-pound weight 15.23 meters.
The second and final day of the Virginia Tech Invitational will begin tomorrow at 11 a.m.
