Women’s Tennis Gears Up for West Point Invite

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's tennis squad will make its 2015-16 home debut this weekend as they welcome 17 teams to the annual West Point Invite.
The Black Knights will host Akron, Albany, Binghamton, Bryant, UConn, Cornell, Fairleigh Dickinson Fordham, Lehigh, LIU, Marist, NJIT, Quinnipiac, Seton Hall, St. Bonaventure and St. Peters to both the indoor and outdoor courts at West Point.
"This is our 18th annual West Point Open, one of the largest tournaments in the country," said head coach Paul Peck. "It is a great way to showcase our great facilities and our historic institution. We look forward to the great competition and it will help get ready for the upcoming Patriot League season."
Matches will get underway at 9 a.m. on Friday with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles. Action will continue throughout the weekend as the tournament will wrap up on Sunday afternoon.
Draw A doubles will be held outside at Malek Tennis Center, while Draw B doubles will take place inside Lichtenberg Tennis Center. Draws A, B and C singles will take place at Malek while Draw D singles will be inside.
The Black Knights were idle last weekend but competed in the Stony Brook Invite and Cornell Invite on Sept. 11-13.
At Stony Brook, the duo of Allyson Hayley and Melanie Allen combined to take the doubles title in Draw B. They opened up with a 6-1 win over a duo from Hofstra, moved on to defeat a pair from Bryant 6-4 and earned a 6-3 victory in the semifinal round over a pair from St. John's. In the title match, Army earned a 6-4 victory over a duo from Bryant.
In singles action, Lorenzini defeated Gariella Campos of Fairfield 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round, moving on to defeat Isabel Balsavage of Navy 2-6, 6-4, 10-2 before dropping a 6-3, 6-2 decision to a Stony Brook opponent in Draw D.
At Cornell, Carolyn Pitman paced the group, defeating Annie DiMuno of Binghamton 5-7, 6-4, 10-2. She then moved on to claim a 6-0, 6-3 win over Alexandra D'Ascenzo of Cornell and a 6-4, 2-6, 10-4 win over Tania Stojanovska of Buffalo to advance to the title match. Squaring off against the top-seeded Gabriela Knutson of Syracuse, Pitman fell 6-3, 6-3.
Kirby Einck defeated Yevgeniya Shusterman of Towson 6-0, 6-2 and Allegra Hanlon of Cornell 1-6, 6-4, 10-7 in Draw D to advance to the title match. In the championship match, she dropped a 7-6 (5), 6-2 decision to Laura Holterbosch of Buffalo.
On the doubles side, Pitman and Spiritos claimed an 8-4 win over Buffalo in the opening round and earned an 8-3 win over a duo from Cornell, competing in Draw A. They fell to the top-seeded pair from Syracuse by a score of 8-4 in the semifinal round.
