Women’s Tennis Sees Success in Day One

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's tennis team competed in day one of the West Point Invite, boasting a multitude of wins in the first day of action.
In A singles, sixth-seeded Carolyn Pitman defeated Malieva Hedberg of St. Peters by a score of 6-1, 6-1 and Genevie McCormick defeated Nathalie Habegger of NJIT 6-1, 6-2.
In B singles, Allyson Hayley defeated Gabbie Bowe of St. Bonaventure 6-4, 4-6, 10-7. Fourth-seedeed Arianna Spiritos defeated Briana Leonard of Bryant 6-3, 6-1. Nan Porter knocked off Mariam Skhirtladze of St. Bonaventure 7-5, 6-2 and secone-seeded Rugile Valiuniate defeated Nicole Chris 7-6 (4), 6-2.
In C singles, fourth-seeded Kirby Einck defeated Rafaella Sampaio of Binghamton 6-4, 6-1 and sixth-seeded Melanie Allen defeated Amanda Pitcocco of Seton Hall 6-3, 6-1. Haley O'Conner defeated Julia Keenan of Seton Hall 6-0, 6-1 and Julian Mok defeated Taylor Gurda of Sacred Heart 7-5, 7-5.
In D singles, fourth-seeded Bridget Guenard defeated Airan Muhammed of St. Peters 6-0, 6-1. Sera Martorelli knocked off Lyan Juarbe of Bryant 6-0, 6-0 and Caroline Lorenzini muscled past Risa Takanaka 7-6 (3), 6-1.
Also competing in singles action was Gabriella Spindler who fell to Alana Prinos of Providence 6-2, 7-5 in A singles and Victoria Falk fell to fifth-seeded Allegra Hanlon of Cornell 6-0, 6-4 in D singles.
On the doubles side, Spindler and Sung teamed up for a 6-1, defeated of Habegger and Sampalo and moved past a pair from Marist 6-2. Allen and Hayley boated a 6-4 win over a pair from St. Bonaventure and earned a 7-6 (10) victory over a duo from LIU. Einck and Porter combined for a 6-0 win over a duo from Marist and a 6-0 sweep of a pair from Lehigh.
In Draw B, Mok and Spiritos defeated a pair from Binghamton 7-5 and moved on to knock off Destiny Grunin and Gianna Insogna 7-6 (5). Guenard and Martorelli earned a 6-2 win over a duo from Albany and then swept past the fifth-seeded pair from Providence by a score of 6-0. O'Conner and Valiunaite knocked off a pair from St. Bonaventure 6-1 but fell to a duo from UConn 7-6 (8).
Also competing in doubles action was McCormick and Pitman who fell to a pair from St. Bonaventure by a mark of 6-3 in Draw A and Hannah Dahlem and Lorenzini who fell to a duo from Fairleigh Dickinson by a mark of 6-2.
Action will resume Saturday and continue through Sunday at both Malek Outdoor Courts and the indoor Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
