Softball Pulls Out 9-8 Thriller Over Ohio
February 14, 2015 | Softball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Army exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning to overcome a 7-1 deficit, then snapped a tie game on Alex Gaff's home run in the top of the seventh with reliever Kristen West stranding the tying and go-ahead runs on base to end the game with a 9-8 come-from-behind victory over Ohio Saturday morning.
The win at D.L. Phillips Softball Complex snapped Army's two-game losing streak at the First Pitch Classic as the Black Knights (3-5) opened the second day on a winning note.
Army sent 11 batters to the plate during its seven-run uprising in the fifth inning. The Black Knights received a two-run double from Gladys Esparza-Gallegos, along with run-scoring singles from reliever Rachael Dehlinger and pinch hitter Caroline Smith. A passed ball and an infield error allowed three more runs to score to cap the inning as Army pulled ahead 8-7.
Ohio tied the game 8-8 on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth. Army led off the top of the sixth with a single off Kaylin Clark, who came on in relief in the fifth, but she retired the side on back-to-back strikeouts and a line drive to the third baseman.
West, who took over in relief in the fifth with one out, issued a walk with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but got out safely on back-to-back groundouts. With one out in the top of the seventh, Gaff slammed her third home run at the tournament and West made that one-run lead stand in the home half after a pair of errors put runners at first and second with one out.
The sophomore right-hander retired the side on a line drive and groundout in posting her second win of the season as she moved to 2-1. West did not yield a hit throwing scoreless ball as she issued one walk and a strikeout facing 11 batters over 2.2 innings of work.
Army trailed 3-0 after the first inning as the Bobcats bunched together seven hits off starter Aja Brechtel (2-0) capped by Casie Hutchinson's two-run homer.
Third baseman Kasey McCravey, who was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, cracked a leadoff home run in the third inning to draw Army to 3-1.
Ohio answered with three runs in the bottom half capped by Dakota Plyes' two-run homer, then added its third home run of the game, a solo blast by Mikayla Cooper in the bottom of the fourth for a 7-1 advantage.
Army takes on host Charlotte at 2 p.m. today.
