Brown Turns Back Army 7-3
February 27, 2015 | Softball
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Yeram Park smacked a two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning and Katie Orong limited Army to two hits over the final four frames in leading Brown to a 7-3 win in its season debut Friday afternoon at the Grand Park Athletic Complex.
Army split its first day of competition against a pair of Ivy League schools in Myrtle Beach, S.C., rallying to defeat Cornell in its first game, 11-10, followed by the loss to the Bears.
Black Knight freshman Xiomara Perez smashed a three-run homer with one out in the bottom of the third inning off Orong to tie the score 3-3 after Brown (1-0) capitalized on an error, a pair of hits and a walk in opening the scoring in the top half of the inning.
Following a groundout, Orong (1-0) issued a walk to Kristen McPeek and Alee Rashenskas touched her for a single, but a fielder's choice ended that threat.
Brown snapped the tie in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs for a 5-3 lead, and Park's home run with a man aboard in the sixth padded its advantage to four runs (7-3).
Orong, who scattered seven hits, struck out 10 batters and walked five in her collegiate debut, kept Army off the scoreboard the rest of the way working out of jams when the Black Knights threatened in each of the final four innings.
McCravey, who reached second base on a passed ball following a hit in the top of the fourth, was stranded when the left hander retired the next two batters on strikeouts. Perez was hit by a pitch in leading off the fifth inning, stole second and gave way to pinch runner Karena Gonzalez who was stranded at third following a strikeout looking.
Tyler McKinney, hit by a pitch to start off the sixth, moved around on back-to-back passed balls, but was thrown out at home plate. In the final seventh, Orong, who issued a pair of walks in that inning sandwiched around a strikeout, struck out the side with a runner at second base.
The Black Knights (4-10) have a pair of games Saturday starting with Cornell at 11:30 a.m. followed by Canisius at 1:30 p.m.
