Army Falls to Charlotte At First Pitch Classic
February 13, 2015 | Softball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Senior co-captain Alex Gaff's two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning drew Army to within two runs (4-2) of Charlotte, but the host 49ers pushed across four runs in the top of the seventh to down the Black Knights, 8-3, Friday afternoon during the opening day of the First Pitch Classic.
After being held scoreless in its first two innings, Charlotte jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning keyed by Jessica Plemmon's two-run triple off Army starter Caroline Smith (1-2) in collecting six of their eight hits off her in that inning.
Kristen West took over from Smith in the fourth inning and held the 49ers scoreless over three frames in scattering four hits. After yielding a walk and double in the fourth inning, she got out safely on a back-to-back infield pop-ups and a groundout.
The sophomore right-hander stranded runners on the corners in the fifth inning getting out safely on a groundout, then retired the side in the top of the sixth after Army drew to 4-2 in the fifth inning.
Mackenzie Hausen (2-0), who went the distance on an eight-hitter, struck out six and walked six, got out of an early jam leaving runners on base in Army's first at bat. After the Black Knights collected a pair of hits with two outs, the lead runner was thrown out at home plate.
The Black Knights were held to two singles over the next three innings before Gaff put Army on the scoreboard in the fifth inning with her first round tripper of the year and career second, but a late rally with bases loaded was nipped.
Freshman Gladys Esparza-Gallegos drew a walk to open that frame and Gaff followed with a home run over the left field fence with no outs in drawing Army to 4-2. Following a groundout and strikeout, Army loaded the bases on Alee Rashenskas' walk, Xiomara Perez' single with Emily Gray reaching on a fielder's choice without an out. Hausen got out out safely when she nipped the rally on an infield groundout
Charlotte broke open the game in the top of the seventh keyed by Haley Pace's two-run triple as the 49ers collected three hits off West in that frame along with capitalizing on two errors.
Army collected eight hits with Kasey McCravey and Gaff with two each. Charlotte had 14 hits off two Army pitchers.
The Black Knights will look to rebound against Quinnipiac.
