Hockey Set for Series with Sacred Heart

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army hockey team returns to the ice this weekend with a home-and-home series with Sacred Heart, including a Saturday night matchup at Tate Rink.

THIS WEEK: HOME-AND-HOME SET WITH SACRED HEART
Army remains in league play this weekend with a home-and-home series with Sacred Heart. The Black Knights will travel on Friday night to the Pioneers and return to Tate Rink on Saturday. Sacred Heart is one of the more improved teams from a season ago and is 5-8-2 overall with a 4-5-1 conference mark. The Pioneers were in action last weekend at Robert Morris and dropped both contests. The first night went to the Coloinals by a 6-3 score and that was followed by a 5-4 score on Sunday afternoon.
NEXT WEEK: BACK ON THE ROAD AT AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL
The Black Knights head back out on the road next weekend with a visit to American International. Friday night's game is a normal 7:05 p.m. start, however, Saturday's contest is a 4:05 p.m. puck drop. The Yellow Jackets are currently 10th in the standings with a 2-7-0 conference record and have a 2-12-0 overall mark. They has lost four of their last five games going into a midweek matchup at Bentley on Dec. 1. American International did not play over the Thanksgiving weekend as it took on Holy Cross on Tuesday, Nov. 24, with the Crusaders coming away with a 3-0 victory.
LAST WEEK: TAKING THREE POINTS AT CANISIUS
The Black Knights moved up the Atlantic Hockey standings thanks to a three-point weekend on the road at Canisius. Army earned a 3-1 win on Saturday night behind strong goalie work by Parker Gahagen. The Black Knights returned the next night and erased an early two-goal deficit and forced a 2-2 draw on Saturday night against the Golden Griffins. Sophomore Tyler Pham came alive with three points on a goal and two assists on the weekend. He came into the games without a goal in his first 10 games and tallied his first of the season on Friday night. Classmate Conor Andrle contines to impress with three more points on a goal and an assist as well. He leads the team in points with 10. Gahagen stopped 37 shots on Friday night at the Harborcenter and followed that up with 20 saves on Saturday to move to 2-3-4 on the season.
ON THE RADIO
Both games will be live on the radio in the Hudson Valley on 1260 WBNR-AM in Beacon and 1430 WLNA-AM in Peekskill. Nikolai Busko is on the call for each game this weekend. The games are also live on Knight Vision at GoArmyWestPoint.com.

TEDDY BEAR TOSS
With Saturday being the final home game prior to the holidays, Army hockey is hosting the teddy bear toss on Saturday night, along with Skate with the Black Knights after the game. Fans are encouraged to bring new or slightly used stuffed animals to the game and during one of the intermissions will be allowed to throw it on the ice for charity.
POWER PLAY CONSISTENCY
The Army power play has been extremely effective this season as the Black Knights are averaging a goal on the man advantage each game. They are at a 22.2 percent success rate heading into the weekend, which is third in the conference. Army has six goals on its last 20 man advantage opportunities in their last four games. Conor Andrle, Joe Kozlak and Trevor Fidler are tied for the team lead in power play goals with two apiece.
HE'S HEATING UP
Reigning Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Year Tyler Pham has started to heat up for the Black Knights after a three-point weekend at Canisius. He went the first 10 games without a goal, but was able to stop that streak with a tally last Friday night in the 3-1 win at the Harborcenter. After a slow start, he has six points in his last six games and points have come in five of the last six contests. Pham tallied his first multi-point game of the season against the Griffs on Nov. 27 with an assist to go with his first goal of the season.
WHO'S GOING TO SCORE?
Army has scored 24 goals this season and they have come from 13 different skaters. Brendan McGuire, Ryan Nick and Clint Carlisle share the team lead with three apiece, while 10 teammates have found the net this season. Taylor Maruya joined the crowd with his first-career goal coming in the 2-2 tie at Canisius. Maruya goal was nice tip-in from out front on a Tyler Pham shot. He is one three rookies to have goals this season as Trevor Fidler and Tipper Higgins have also found the back of the net.
COACHING MARK
Army's head coach Brian Riley is coming up on his 400th career game behind the bench for the hockey program. He currently sits at 399 games coached in 11-plus seasons with the Black Knights. Friday night he will hit No. 400 at Sacred Heart.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Sacred Heart enters this weekend with a 5-8-2 overall record and a 4-5-1 conference mark after dropping two games at Robert Morris last week. The Pioneers have gone winless in their last six games, including four league contests. They started the season well with four conference wins in their first six matchups, but have gone without a win in their last four games. Sacred Heart is averaging 2.47 goals per game, while allowing just under three a game. The power play is at 13.5 percent with seven goals in 52 opportunities.
Junior Evan Jasper leads the way with 12 points on four goals and eight assists. He had two points in the 5-4 loss to Robert Morris last Sunday with a goal and an assist to take over the team lead in points. Sophomore Alec Butcher also had a goal and an assist on Nov. 29 against the Colonials and has 11 points on the year, while junior Justin Danforth is third in points with 10. Butcher is the leader in assists with nine.
In net, rookie Brett Magnus has had 14 starts and sports a 5-7-2 record and a 4-4-1 mark in conference play. He has two shutouts on the year and a 2.47 goals against average. Sophomore Nathan Perry made his first start of the year last Sunday and allowed five goals against the Colonials.
SERIES HISTORY
The Pioneers lead the series with a 27-23-6 record. The series began in 1995-96 and the two teams met for the first time in the playoffs last season. Sacred Heart swept the Black Knights out of the playoffs with a 2-0 win in game one and a 5-2 victory in the second game.
