"This weekend and the experience gained is invaluable when it comes to performing our best when it matters the most," said head coach Mickey Wender. "Swimming in a three-day preliminary and finals championship type of event is very unique and takes some getting used to. The plebes especially haven't been exposed to this format yet and it is a grind. It is the reason we do double practices and to perform well morning and night, three days in a row, takes some toughness, discipline and experience to figure out how to make it work.
"It is also great to get the team away to allow them to be together and support each other in and out of the pool. It is a great facility and wonderful city, and we look forward to going to Boston each year. There is great competition with the schools that are going to be there. It is a big weekend for us, and we are going to go in there, race hard and learn a lot."
Earlier this month, the Black Knights improved to 4-0 with a 160-139 win over Fordham. The Black Knights won six events to continue one of the best starts to a season in several years. Army swept first through third in four events including the 1000 free, 100 breast, 200 breast and 500 free.
Brigit Ritter earned a first place finish in the 500 free with a time of 5:02.19. She then placed second in both the 200 free and 200 IM.
The Cadets join a field made up of eight schools including host Boston University, Boston College, Bridgeport, Colgate, Fairfield, Soka, UMass and Vermont.
"It is a balanced field and I like the addition of Bridgeport, which is a very solid Division II program," added Wender. "UMass and Boston U are teams that we know well, so we look forward to racing them. Boston College is a solid ACC team and always brings versatility and talent. It is a really competitive and diverse field, but we fully expect that we are going to be right in the mix. This a meet where we need to race and compete hard in."
Prior to the meet, the first classmen on Army's roster will participate in Branch Night. Although they will be away from West Point, the seniors will find out their branch assignments on Thursday night.
"Branch night will be great," Wender shared. "It is unfortunate that it falls on a day that the firsties can't be there with their classmates, but I think to be there with their teammates is meaningful. It will be a great experience."
