Golf to Face Yale in Inaugural Bush Cup
October 07, 2015 | Men's Golf
WEST POINT, N.Y. – In honor of former President George H.W. Bush, Army West Point, Yale and the Winged Foot Golf Club have joined together to present the inaugural Bush Cup. Army and Yale will face off at the prestigious course on Friday Oct. 9, with special guest General (ret.) Raymond T. Odierno in attendance.
"It is an honor to be hosting the Inaugural Bush Cup this year at the Historic Winged Foot Golf Club," said head coach Brian Watts. "The event is honoring our former President George H.W. Bush for his service to our Nation and the Bush Family's passion and commitment to the game of golf. This event is unlike anything else in collegiate golf and will continue for many years to come. We are excited to be hosting Yale as both President George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush graduated from this prestigious university."
The Bush Cup will mimic the format of the Walker Cup due to a conversation between George Herbert Walker and W. Norman Boase of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. George Herbert Walker was the maternal grandfather of his namesake, George H.W. Bush, the 41st President of the United States.
Therefore, four groups will tee-off in foursomes, also referred to as alternate shot, at 7:30 a.m. from the East Course. The afternoon will feature eight individual matches beginning at 1 p.m. on the West Course.
Each match is worth one point, and if the match ends all-square, both teams will be awarded a half a point. The first team to earn 6.5 out of 12 points will be named the winner of the Bush Cup.
Winged Foot has a legendary history of hosting major championships including five U.S. Open Championships, two U.S. Women's Championships, one Senior Open Championship, the PGA Championship and two U.S. Amateur Championships. Winged Foot was also honored to host the 1949 Championship.
George H.W. Bush, in his letter to the Winged Foot Golf Club, expressed his sentiments toward the special tournament played in his honor. "I am thrilled…not only will the event bear my name, but more importantly, it recognizes service to this country." Bush also wished for the "day to be filled with birdies and eagles – and maybe even a hole-in-one!" one of the few feats that the famed former president has yet to accomplish in his life.
Army's lineup will be made up of Marcus Plunkett, Dean Sakata, Nick Turner, Matt Plunkett, Parker Harris, as well as newcomers to the team, Steven Pedersen, Brandon Roberts and Brian Stecker.
After golfing has commenced, much more pageantry will ensue. The West Point Parachute Team will kick-off the evening's festivities, which include a formal dinner at the club. The Army Hellcats and Yale Wiffenpoofs will provide musical entertainment before John Schneider, Winged Foot President, Brigadier General Timothy E. Trainor, U.S. Military Academy Dean of Students, Thomas Beckett, Yale Director of Athletics and General (ret.) Raymond T. Odierno, former U.S. Army Chief of Staff, speak before the players, families and guests.
