WEST POINT, N.Y. – After two weeks of match play, the Army West Point golf team will return to stroke play for its final tournament of the fall. The Black Knights will participate in the Price's Give 'Em Five Invitational hosted by the University of Texas at El Paso Oct. 23-25, at the Butterfield Trail Golf Course.
Â
"We are looking forward to the event at UTEP," said head coach Brian Watts. "It has been a great tournament in years past with a good field, and we are excited to go down there to compete. It will be our first stroke play competition in almost a month so we have to switch gears in our mind going from match play to medal play."
Â
Last weekend, the Black Knights defeated Navy in the annual Star Match 6.5-4.5. The match play event was all-square after the four-ball round, but 4.5 points during the individuals round propelled the Cadets to clinch Army's fourth-straight Star over the Mids.
Â
Peter Kim was one of two golfers to win in both rounds and was named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week. During four-ball, Kim was partnered with Nick Turner. The two defeated the pair of Midshipmen 2 up with a birdie on the 18th hole. In the individual round, Kim defeated his opponent on the 16th hole, 4-and-2.
Â
"It's amazing how fast the fall season goes, and here we are upon our last tournament of the fall," said Watts. "We will be a part of a special event at UTEP where our veterans are honored in a golf clinic that we will be a part of Thursday. Anytime there's an opportunity for us to give back, it means a lot to the team."
Â
Army will utilize the five-man team of Peter Kim, Marcus Plunkett, Dean Sakata, Nick Turner and Parker Harris.
Â
Other schools in attendance will be service academy rival Air Force, George Washington, Idaho, Kansas, Marquette, New Mexico State, San Jose State, St. Mary's, Texas State, UMKC, UTSA and Western New Mexico.
Â
The tournament features 18-holes on each day with an 8 a.m. (MT) start on Friday and Saturday, and an 8:15 a.m. (MT) shotgun start on Sunday.
Â
The Price's Give 'Em Five Invitational is in its fourth year after beginning in 2012. The lowest team score is 818 which was recorded by New Mexico State in 2014. Cody Blicke from San Jose State and Antoine Rozner from UMKC both shot a 198 in 2014 to claim the lowest individual score.Â
Â
Butterfield Trail Golf Club is a par-72, 7,307-yard course. Designed by Tom Fazio and located just minutes from the El Paso Airport, Butterfield Trail was rated the third-best municipal course in the nation by Golfweek in 2010.
Â
"It is another opportunity for the guys to compete against some great teams, and we are looking forward to the tournament," added Watts.
Â
Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.
