Army And Marist Battle To 1-1 Tie
September 16, 2014 | Men's Soccer
Army (2-1-3) received a first-half goal from sophomore Nick Williams, while Marist (4-1-1) answered with a tally off the foot of senior Myles Ashong.
Army was credited with the game’s first two shots in an opening half that saw only four shots between the two teams. Williams had his attempt blocked in the fifth minute before classmate Tanner Vosvick’s chance was blocked before making it to goal in the 26th minute.
Army got on the board shortly thereafter when Williams’ right-footed shot beat Marist freshman keeper Mark Rajovic in the bottom left corner in the 30th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
“Nick’s goal was exactly what we’ve been working on since we started practicing this year, in terms of having sharp ball movement,” said head coach Russell Payne. “We have to use this game, just like we used the last game, to reinforce the fact that we can play and we have great attacking moments, but we have to continue to capitalize on those moments.”
Marist struck right back to knot the game at one apiece, when Ashong converted a pass from freshman Brandon Curtis for the equalizer that came in the 34th minute, just 4:14 after Williams’ marker.
The Red Foxes won a pair of corner kicks in the 44th minute, but were unable to create a scoring chance off either one.
Army junior Alex Clark opened the second period with a shot on frame that was turned away by Rajovic in the 52nd minute before Vosvick sent a header high following a corner kick by junior Justin Kim 48 seconds later.
Senior Winston Boldt made his only save of the contest in the 76th minute on a shot by Marist junior Steven Arraiano, while Rajovic, who totaled three saves on the night, denied a chance by sophomore Trase Stapley in the 87th minute.
Marist outshot Army, 2-1, in the first overtime period, while the Black Knights had the only two shots of the second overtime. Senior Sean Mogan’s 103rd-minute attempt was blocked by the Marist defense before junior Cameron Niccum directed Stapley’s corner kick wide in the 109th minute.
Army returns to Clinton Field to begin a three-match homestand this Saturday when it welcomes St. Francis Brooklyn for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
