Army Handed 2-0 Setback By St. Francis Brooklyn
September 20, 2014 | Men's Soccer
WEST POINT, N.Y. - A pair of second-half goals by St. Francis Brooklyn gave the visiting Terriers all they would need to pick up a 2-0 win over the Army men’s soccer team in a nonconference match on Saturday evening at Clinton Field.
With the loss, Army, which is ranked 10th in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Northeast Region poll, drops to 2-2-3 on the year, while the Terriers grab their second win in a row to improve to 2-4-1.
Army senior goalkeeper Winston Boldt made one save in his seventh start of the season for the Black Knights. Junior Philip Shafer and sophomore Nyle Patel netted goals for St. Francis Brooklyn, while redshirt junior, Jack Binks turned away three shots.
Neither goalie was called upon to make a save in the opening half, as the Terriers outshot the Black Knights, 2-1, in the period. While he wasn’t credited with a save in the first half, Boldt did his part to prevent St. Francis from getting on the board early on. Included in those efforts was a sliding play at the top of the 18-yard box in the 13th minute to beat a St. Francis forward to the ball after a dangerous pass from the midfield.
Army’s only shot of the stanza came in the 41st minute when junior Justin Kim’s free kick from the right edge of the 18-yard box was blocked away by a wall of St. Francis Brooklyn defenders.
The Black Knights nearly found the back of the net early in the second half when sophomore Tanner Vosvick’s free kick was deflected off the post by Binks in the 52nd minute.
St. Francis Brooklyn broke the scoreless tie 11:02 later when Patel converted the rebound of a saved header by junior Harry Odell in the 63rd minute. Boldt made a diving stop to prevent the initial chance by Odell before Patel pounced on the loose ball to put the visitors up, 1-0.
Army came close to equalizing over the next 13 minutes as senior Sean Mogan and junior Cameron Niccum each had threatening opportunities near the Terriers’ net. Mogan sent a hard shot through traffic that was saved by a diving Binks in the 76th minute before Niccum got on the end of a cross by freshman Marcos Arroyo, but sent a header wide of the left post.
St. Francis Brooklyn doubled its lead moments later after Shafer headed in a cross from freshman Dominick Falanga in 78th minute. Army tried to mount a comeback, but was unable to create opportunities despite possessing the ball for the majority of the second half and outshooting the visitors, 8-4, in the period.
“It was a disappointing night for us,” said Army head coach Russell Payne. “In about the last 30 minutes of the game, we definitely had our chances to rebound and get some goals back, but it didn’t happen. The way we started the game made it hard for us at the end.”
Army continues its three-game homestand on Tuesday, when the Black Knights host Central Connecticut State in their final match before beginning Patriot League play.
GAME NOTES: Army falls to 1-2-1 all-time against St. Francis Brooklyn … freshman Denys Villatoro made his career debut for the Black Knights … Army drops to 0-2-0 against Northeast Conference competition this season.
