WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army men’s soccer team played to a scoreless draw against Quinnipiac on a rain-soaked playing surface Saturday evening at Clinton Field. With the tie, the Black Knights move to 2-1-2 overall, while the Bobcats go to 1-3-1.
Saturday’s game marked the second straight year Army and Quinnipiac have finished in a 0-0 tie, after the teams played to the same result last season in Hamden, Conn.
“We’re both attacking, possession-based teams and we did well keeping the ball out of the back of the net,” said Army head coach Russell Payne. “There were a lot of shots on both ends, but it just didn’t happen tonight. Our guys are working hard. We did well to take a lot of chances in the game and we have to keep building on that.”
Army senior goalkeeper Winston Boldt made three saves to grab his fourth shutout of the season. The clean sheet was also the 20th of Boldt’s career as the St. Louis, Mo., native added to his Academy career shutout record.
Quinnipiac senior goalie Borja Angoitia also came up with three stops in net to earn his first shutout of the season.
Neither keeper was called upon to make a save in the opening half, with both teams firing three shots in the period. Boldt snuffed out a dangerous cross from Quinnipiac senior Ashton Pett in the 16th minute to keep the score level before Army freshman Shaban Abousaud was denied by a sliding Bobcat defender in the 27th minute on what was the Black Knights’ most-threatening scoring opportunity of the half.
The second half saw better chances from both teams, as Army registered eight of its 14 shots in the period and Quinnipiac attempted six. Quinnipiac senior Machel Baker had a hard shot go wide of the right post in the 51st minute, while senior Sean Mogan sent a shot high for the Black Knights 2:34 later.
Army possessed the ball for the majority of the second half, but Quinnipiac found ways to break out and create a number of scoring opportunities. Junior James Greco had a pair of shots turned away early in the period, as an initial shot was blocked by Army junior Cameron Niccum before Boldt stopped the follow-up attempt.
The Black Knights won a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box in the 71st minute to set up an opportune scoring chance for the hosts. Sophomore Tanner Vosvick took the free kick, but sent the shot high of the crossbar to keep the game deadlocked.
Army managed one shot in the first overtime period before both sides notched a pair of shots in the second overtime. Boldt saved a shot by Greco in the 101st minute, which came as his only save of either extra session. Niccum and junior Alex Clark recorded shots on goal in the final 4:33 of the second overtime, but neither made it past Angoitia.
The Black Knights are back on the road Tuesday, Sept. 16 to face Hudson Valley rival Marist at 7 p.m.
