Jordan Smith joined the Army Track & Field staff in June 2024 after three years of coaching at Alvernia University in Reading, PA. During his first year at Alvernia, Smith served as the Associate Head Coach of Track & Field, followed by two years as the Head Coach of both Track & Field and Cross Country. At West Point, he serves as an assistant coach specializing in the horizontal jumping events.Â
2024-2025:Â
Smith’s first year of coaching with the Black Knights saw significant growth and development in the horizontal jumps group. The biggest highlight came as the women’s track & field team won the Patriot League Outdoor Championship for the first time in 16 years. The men’s triple jump group also proved themselves to be one of the best groups of triple jumpers in the country, consistently being ranked in the top 10 in the national event rankings every week for both seasons. During the indoor season, the group reached as high as #5 in the nation, and during the outdoor season the group reached as high as #3 in the nation. The Army men’s triple jumpers also held the #3 rank for three consecutive weeks during the outdoor season. They finished the outdoor season being ranked as the #1 triple jump squad in the Northeast region.Â
Between the indoor and outdoor seasons, Smith guided his jumpers to 5 Patriot League medals (1 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze). During the indoor season, Smith helped his athletes earn 5 different spots on the all-time top 10 lists in the long jump and triple jump. During the outdoor season, he helped his athletes claim 9 different spots on the all-time top 10 lists in the long jump and triple jump. Between both the indoor and outdoor Army vs. Navy Star Meets, Smith’s jumpers claimed 7 first place finishes out of the 8 possible opportunities. Smith’s jumpers were also able to contribute on the track with the sprints and relays as well as the high jump. Army outscored Navy in the horizontal jumps by 24 points at both Star Meets this year. Kalliauna Powers also set the Army program record and the Star Meet record at the same time as she leaped to a 6.01m personal best in the long jump at the outdoor Star Meet. Javan Guevara-Cragwell also set a new Star Meet record as he jumped his way to 15.18m in the triple jump at the outdoor Star Meet, which was a personal best at the time. Javan later qualified for the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round from his winning triple jump and personal best of 15.37m at the Outdoor Patriot League Championship. James Beckett also qualified for the USATF U20 Championship when he jumped a personal best of 15.01m in the triple jump which earned him 2nd place at the outdoor Star Meet.Â
Prior to Army West PointÂ
At Alvernia, Smith significantly advanced the program, overseeing numerous record-breaking performances, NCAA qualifiers, and NCAA All-Americans. Under his leadership, the program achieved 80 school records in track & field and 6 in cross country. Nationally, Smith coached nine NCAA Division III qualifiers in track & field, one in cross country, and guided athletes to five NCAA Division III All-America honors. Regionally, there were 62 qualifiers for the AARTFC Championships under his tenure, resulting in three first-place finishes and eight top-three finishes overall. He also placed 26 athletes on the Mid-Atlantic All-Region team. At the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) level, Smith’s athletes set four MAC overall records, three MAC Championship records, won 11 gold medals, and achieved 38 All-Conference performances. His guidance also earned Elisabeth Schwarz the title of the 2022 MAC Outdoor Track & Field Rookie of the Year.Â
Among his most notable achievements was overseeing the development of Shinelle Felix, the most decorated athlete in the program’s history. Felix became a five-time NCAA DIII All-American, earning four First Team All-America honors (2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 6th), and one Second Team All-America honor (12th). She broke a 25-year-old triple jump facility record at the 25th Annual Bison Open and Multi hosted by Bucknell University with a jump of 12.67m (41’ 7’’), which also set new school and MAC records and tied her for the fifth-best performer in Division III history in the indoor triple jump. Felix went on to place second at the indoor national championships and third at the outdoor championships that same year. Her jump of 12.60m (41’ 4.25’’) at the outdoor championship placed her as the tenth-best performer in Division III history in the outdoor triple jump.Â
Before Alvernia, Smith was a Graduate Assistant Coach at Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts. He was in charge of the throwers and assisted with the multis throughout his time at Regis. He only had one indoor season of coaching with the Pride before the COVID-19 pandemic began. In that one indoor season he helped Cole Anderson break the school record in the weight throw with a throw of 15.31m (50’ 2.75’’) at the GNAC Championship. Smith’s throwers also scored 27 points at the GNAC Indoor Championships. For the 2020-2021 academic year, he was promoted to an Interim Head Coach of Track & Field and Cross Country.Â
Prior to CoachingÂ
Smith attended Utica University from 2015-2019 and was a part of both the track & field and soccer teams. For the track & field team, he trained and competed as a multi-event athlete in the heptathlon and decathlon. Smith broke the Utica school record in the javelin throw in his freshman year and eventually qualified for the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship. He was the first pioneer to ever qualify for the national championship in the javelin throw. Smith still currently ranks in the top ten on the Utica all-time performance lists for the javelin, 60m hurdles, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, heptathlon, and decathlon. He was also a team captain and helped Utica win back to back conference championships in 2016 and 2017, with 2016 being the first conference championship won in program history. During the 2019 outdoor track season, he also competed at the Army West Point Twilight meet where he placed 3rd place in the javelin throw.Â
