Fennessy enters her third consecutive and fifth overall season as a member of the Black Knights' coaching staff.
This past year, she helped coach the Cadets to a second-place showing on both the men's and women's side at the Patriot League Championships. The men and women each posted their highest point totals in the past 16 years at the league championships, while 17 Cadets garnered all-league recognition.
Fennessy joined the Army West Point swimming and diving coaching staff in August of 2017. She works primarily with the middle distance group. The San Lorenzo, Calif., native is no stranger to Army as she served as a volunteer assistant coach during the 2016-17 campaign and as an assistant coach from 2006-08.
“We are thrilled to welcome Kim back to our full-time coaching staff,” head swimming and diving coach Mickey Wender said. “She and I have worked together on-and-off for almost 20 years. It’s a great privilege to partner with someone who I coached in college.”
Prior to coming on the staff last year, Fennessy was an assistant coach at the University of Puget Sound from 2008-10.
Wender has worked with Fennessy for several years as she was a member of his coaching staff at the University of Washington from 2004-06, after wrapping up her four-year career as a swimmer for the Huskies.
Fennessy was a four-year letterwinner on the swim team at Washington from 1999-2003, as well as a three-time team captain, All-American and a PAC-10 champion in the 200-yard freestyle. During her time with the Huskies, she placed fourth at NCAAs in 2003 in both the 50m and 100m freestyle.
“Her achievements as an All-American and PAC-10 champion speak for themselves,” Wender stated. “She is an even better coach and role model for our future leaders.”
She also competed at the Olympic Trials in 2000 and 2004 in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle as well as the 100m backstroke.
Fennessy currently resides at West Point with her husband, Stephen, who teaches Accounting in BS&L and their two children Colin and Caroline.
