Mike Coughlin completed his first season as an assistant coach at Army in 2016.
Coughlin helped guide the Cadets to a 9-8-2 overall record, including a 4-4-1 mark in Patriot League competition during the 2016 season. Under Coughlin’s assistance, Army qualified for the Patriot League Tournament for the fourth season in a row and defeated Navy for the second year in a row, with a 1-0 win over the Mids on Sept. 23 at Talen Energy Stadium in Chester, Pa.
Five Army players earned All-Patriot League honors in 2016, as freshman Zac McGraw was named to the first team, and seniors Christian Clark and Tanner Vosvick, junior Marcos Arroyo, and freshman Rex Epps were recognized on the third team.
As the team’s goalkeepers coach, Coughlin worked closely with keepers Matthew Evans, Christian Nolasco and Justin Stoll. Stoll finished his first season with four shutouts, a .783 save percentage and a 1.08 goals against average.
Coughlin came to West Point after spending the last four seasons as an assistant and goalkeepers coach at New Jersey City University.
Coughlin began his tenure at New Jersey City University in 2012 and helped the Gothic Knights to an 11-10-1 overall record. He mentored goalkeeper Sheldon Parkinson, who earned All-New Jersey Athletic Conference honorable mention praise following the season.
In addition to his experience at the college level, Coughlin currently serves as the goalkeeper trainer and assistant coach for the New Jersey Cedar Stars Academy of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. He also worked as an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach with the New Jersey Olympic Development Program and served as head coach and general manager for the New York Athletic Club of the National Premier Soccer League during its inaugural season in 2008.
Coughlin started his coaching career at the high school level, working as an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach at The Pingry School from 1995-99 before returning to his high school alma mater for a second stint from 2011-15. In between his positions at Pingry, Coughlin spent 10 years working in institutional equity sales and global business development on Wall Street.
Coughlin played collegiately at the University of Vermont and made an immediate impact, helping the Catamounts to a North Atlantic Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament as a freshman starting goalkeeper in 1990, while playing the majority of the season with a broken wrist. He redshirted the 1991 season due to the wrist injury before returning to the net for the 1992, 1993 and 1994 seasons.
Coughlin played three seasons of professional soccer in the United Soccer League, spending the majority of his time with the New York Stallions and the North Jersey Imperials.
Coughlin graduated from the University of Vermont in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Small Business.
