April 18, 2026 | Softball
WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point softball's (25-22, 7-5) win streak was snapped on Saturday, falling in two games in a doubleheader against the Boston University Terriers (36-13, 13-2), 4-10 and 2-8.
Army showed resilience late but couldn't overcome an early deficit, falling to Boston U. 10-4 despite a few key offensive moments and defensive flashes. In game two, the Black Knights couldn't overcome a big early inning from the Terriers, resulting in the 8-2 loss.
With the losses, the Black Knights ultimately fall to the Terriers in the regular-season Patriot League series, 1-2. The Black Knights handed Boston U only its second loss in league play on Friday, earning a 6-4 win.
Alongside the action on the field, before the beginning of the doubleheader, Army also celebrated seven cadet-athletes: Nessa Andersen, Mia Bonsignore, Taylor Brown, Amanda Eaglin, Breanna Izzo, Caitlyn Newburn and Ashton White.
Breanna Coonfare led Army's offensive efforts on the day, finishing the day with team-highs in hits with two, batting average at .600 and RBIs with two. She had a slugging percentage of .800, thanks to an RBI triple in game two, her third triple of the season.
Samantha Sims and Sienna Tepley each added two hits, with Sienna Tepley extending her hitting streak to 12 straight games. Sims also added one RBI on a double. Taylor Brown, Ashton White, Tayten Moore, Emma Murchison and Hannah Laub also added hits for the Black Knights, with White and Murchison also adding one RBI.
Amanda Eaglin and Katelyn Flanders received the starts for the Black Knights, the duo ultimately receiving losses on the day. Breanna Izzo finished the day with a team-high three strikeouts in 10.0 innings pitched, averaging a team-low 4.20 ERA and .302 opposing batting average.
GAME 1
Army's defense made an immediate impact in the first inning, turning a sharp double play, with Taylor Brown stretching for a lineout, then connecting with Hannah Laub to erase a leadoff baserunner and keep the game scoreless early.
However, Boston U broke through in the second, capitalizing on traffic and hit-by-pitches to plate three runs and take a 3-0 lead.
The Terriers added on in the fourth, using a pair of hits and an Army error to push the advantage to 5-0, then created separation in the fifth with a three-run home run that extended the lead to 8-0.
Army began to chip away in the bottom of the fifth. After Breanna Coonfare worked a walk, Samantha Sims delivered an RBI double to right center to get the Black Knights on the board at 8-1.
The offense found more rhythm in the sixth. Tayten Moore reached and moved into scoring position, and a bases-loaded walk from Caitlyn Newburn forced in a run. Moments later, Emma Murchison drove in another on a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 8-3.
Boston U responded in the seventh with two more runs to stretch the lead to 10-3, but Army continued to compete in the bottom half.
Sienna Tepley and Moore both singled to create an opportunity, and Ashton White brought home Tepley with a sacrifice fly for the final run of the game, making the score 10-4.
GAME 2
After a quiet first inning by both teams, filled with strong defensive plays. Boston U. broke things open in the second inning.
The Terriers capitalized on a mix of hits, walks, and an error to score five runs and take a 5-0 lead.
Army's first response came in the bottom of the second. After a walk and a fielder's choice created traffic on the bases, Coonfare delivered the biggest hit of the inning, driving a triple into the gap to bring home a run and put Army on the board at 5-1.
Boston U followed with a two-run home run in the third to extend the margin to 7-1, adding to Army's deficit, then added another run in the sixth to make it 8-1, continuing to take advantage of opportunities offensively.
In the circle, Izzo entered in relief during the third inning and helped settle things down. After Boston U's early surge, she worked through multiple innings, limiting further damage and giving Army a chance to stay competitive.
Army added its final run in the seventh. Hannah Laub singled, and Emma Murchison followed with another base hit to put runners in scoring position. Coonfare again contributed, this time with a productive RBI groundout to bring home Laub and make it 8-2, but Army fell short of a full rally, falling to the Terriers for the second straight game.
