No. 18/19 Men’s Lacrosse Earns Gritty 14-11 Win Over Lehigh on Firstie Day

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The No. 18/19 Army West Point men's lacrosse team (6-3, 1-2 Patriot League) welcomed the Lehigh Mountain Hawks (5-4, 2-2 Patriot League) to Michie Stadium on Saturday for a league matchup as the Black Knights celebrated Firstie Day for its class of 2026.
In a back-and-forth battle in front of their home crowd, the Black Knights put up a fourth quarter push that earned Army its second Patriot League victory of the season with the 14-11 win.
The Plunkett brothers led Army's scorers with four points each from two goals and two assists for Evan and a goal and three assists for Hill. Drew Miller led the Black Knights with a hat trick, however, burying a career-high three goals against Lehigh.
Sean Byrne stood tall in goal for Army, recording his 12th consecutive game with at least ten saves as he recorded 14 saves against Lehigh's 25 shots on goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a pregame ceremony to recognize the 14 firsties on Army's roster and three firstie team managers, the Black Knights and the Mountain Hawks settled in for a Saturday afternoon league matchup at Michie Stadium.
Lehigh struck first with a goal 33 seconds into the game, but the Black Knights were determined to succeed on their home turf. Senior defenseman John Sullivan put Army on the board with a goal a minute after the Mountain Hawks, carrying the ball into Lehigh's defensive zone and burying a shot with no hesitation.
Evan Plunkett scored second for Army just under two minutes later after his brother Hill Plunkett fed him a pass on the fly from behind the Lehigh cage.
Army earned its first lead of the day two minutes later when junior attackman Mike Harney fired away on a turn and shoot run from behind the Lehigh goal to put Army ahead 3-1.
Gunnar Fellows secured his 21st goal of the season with 6:41 left on the clock on a set up from Hill Plunkett to extend Army's lead to three.
The Mountain Hawks put two more goals on the board in the final minutes of the opening frame, but Army's defense held on to carry the 4-3 lead into the first break of the game.
Feeling the momentum from the end of the first quarter, the Mountain Hawks led the second quarter offensively with five goals to Army's two.
Drew Miller and Brayden Fountain struck home for the Black Knights to keep the squad within two goals of Lehigh, but the visitors carried an 8-6 lead into halftime.
The Black Knights turned up the heat coming out of the locker room, tallying five goals to Lehigh's one in the third frame.
Brayden Fountain secured his second goal of the game 47 seconds back into the action as Hill Plunkett earned his third assist of the day.
Miller scored his second goal of the game just after the 10-minute mark ticked byon a pass from Evan Plunkett before Plunkett turned around to score a goal of his own 78 seconds later to put Army back in the lead 9-8.
Capitalizing on the Army momentum, Miller tallied his third goal of the game with 6:17 left on the clock before sophomore midfielder Aiden Weisenborn extended Army's lead once more with 3:33 left before the third quarter break.
Lehigh snuck a goal past Byrne with two seconds left on the clock, but Army maintained a two-goal lead headed into the final quarter of regulation.
With all eyes on the fourth quarter, Lehigh kept things close as the Mountain Hawks cut into Army's lead with a goal 50 seconds into the fourth frame.
A stalemate ensued between the two defenses until Lehigh tied things up at 11 goals each with 5:39 left in the game.
Army rallied and put on a clinic in the final five minutes of play as Mike Harney scored his second goal of the game a minute after Lehigh's tying goal.
Weisenborn added to the Black Knights tally with just under three minutes left on the clock before Hill Plunkett put the exclamation point on Army's fourth-quarter performance with a goal just 34 seconds after Weisenborn to give Army a 14-11 lead that held through the final whistle.
