No. 13 Men’s Lacrosse Drops Game 10-8 at Boston U.
March 14, 2026 | Men's Lacrosse
BOSTON, Mass. – Army West Point men's lacrosse (6-2, 1-2 Patriot League) suffered its second league loss of the season on Saturday as the Boston University Terriers (5-2, 3-0 Patriot League) claimed the 10-8 victory in the midday matchup.
Army and Boston University locked horns defensively throughout the contest, but the Terriers' offensive production in the second quarter opened up a gap the Black Knights could not quite close in the Saturday showdown.
Seniors Gunnar Fellows and Evan Plunkett led Army's offense with three points each. Fellows earned his fourth hat trick of the season while Plunkett tallied two goals and an assist to secure his 150th career point.
Senior goalkeeper Sean Byrne tallied 13 saves against BU's 23 shots on goal, his tenth consecutive game with at least ten saves dating back to his ten saves against Loyola Maryland on April 25, 2025.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Black Knights stepped out onto Nickerson Field in search of redemption and their second league victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, answering the Terriers' early goal with one of their own just three minutes into the game to set the tone for a tightly contested matchup.
Cal Lambert scored the first goal of the day for Army, sneaking up on the outside to receive a pass from Hill Plunkett at the point that Lambert sent straight to the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season.
The Terriers took control of the middle of the first quarter, tallying two goals over the next three and a half minutes to take their first two-goal lead of the day.
Army answered the challenge as seniors Gunnar Fellows and van Plunkett logged back-to-back unassisted goals within 40 seconds of one another to bring the game tied at three apiece with five minutes left on the clock in the first quarter.
The Black Knights continued to press their offensive momentum as the final minutes ticked away in the first frame, but saves from the Terriers' goalkeeper held the score at three all through the first break.
Boston scored its second goal of the game in the first minute of a quarter as the second quarter began, tallying a goal 37 seconds into the action that Army retaliated for with a goal of its own just after the 12-minute mark.
Gunnar Fellows netted his second goal of the game to bring things tied at four all before the Terriers surged ahead with three consecutive goals to close out the first half on a 7-4 lead despite a flurry of quality chances for the Black Knights throughout the quarter.
Boston scored the next two goals of the game to expand to a five-goal lead three and a half minutes back into game play.
After a turnover for the Terriers in the Black Knights' defensive zone, Army found its second half stride and sparked a three-goal run that began with Drew Miller's long-pole goal just after the nine-minute mark.
Evan Plunkett carried the ball into attacking position but sent the ball over to Miller who took advantage of the open space he was left in by the Terriers' defense and buried his second goal of the season to bring the game to 9-5 in BU's favor.
Two minutes later John Sullivan cleared the ball under pressure with a long pass down the field to Hill Plunkett who whipped around and fired his 15th goal of the season to hold onto the momentum for the Black Knights.
Army scored its next goal just one minute later as Gunnar Fellows worked around the back of the goal and snaked a shot around the defensive pressure from his defender, tallying his third goal of the game and bringing Army back within two with just under six minutes left on the clock.
The two teams traded shots as the next clock continued to drop, but two saves for Byrne and big efforts from the Terriers' defense held the score at 9-7 going into the final frame of regulation.
Army seemed to hold the momentum as the fourth quarter began and the Black Knights scored first in a quarter for the first time in the contest.
After holding down the fort on defense, Army flew down the field as the clock ticked past the nine-minute mark and Brayden Fountain lobbed a pass to Evan Plunkett who waited nearby and let a shot rip into the back of the net for his second goal of the day, bringing Army within one goal of BU.
Army continued to fire away at the Terriers' goal, but Boston found the back of the net for the tenth time on Saturday with six and a half minutes left on the clock to return to a two-goal lead.
The Black Knights fought vehemently for a chance to close the gap, firing off six shots in the remaining time and allowing only two for BU, but Boston's defense locked in around their goal to hold off Army's offensive efforts and carry their lead through the final whistle.
