WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point hockey (11-12-5, 6-11-3 Atlantic Hockey America) fell 3-2 in an overtime game against the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Tigers (15-12-2, 11-8-2 Atlantic Hockey America) on Saturday afternoon at Tate Rink.
The Black Knights sought to capitalize on the momentum of their 6-2 Friday night win but after a tumultuous Saturday showdown, RIT scored in just before the final minute of overtime to split the weekend series.
JJ Cataldo took to the ice against the Tigers where he recorded 30 saves against the Tigers' 33 shots on goal.
RIT sent Jakub Krbecek out to face Army where he delivered 31 saves against the Black Knights' 32 shots on goal.
Maintaining their momentum from the night before, Army struck first in the first period of action despite an offensive onslaught from the Tigers.
The Black Knights drew a power play opportunity seven and a half minutes into the action that allowed Nik Hong and Nils Forselius to set up Billy Batten on a patch of open ice for his fourth goal of the season to break open the scoring.
RIT fought voraciously for the chance to equalize as the first quarter wound down, dominating the first period shots on goal differential 16-3, but Army's defense locked in around Cataldo to hold the Tigers scoreless through the first intermission.
The Tigers' aggression paid off in the second period, however, and the visitors from Rochester tied the game seven minutes into the second frame on a breakaway opportunity for the RIT offense.
Army worked hard to regain their lead, closing the gap with 8-10 shots on goal differential, but the score held tied through the second intermission.
With the score even heading into the third frame, the two teams picked up the pace as they fought to break the stalemate.
The two teams traded blows back and forth, but the Tigers found the opening just before the 14-minute mark as they slipped the puck past Cataldo's skate on a back-and-forth play to take a 2-1 lead.
Army's offense hounded Krbecek with 18 shots on goal to the Tigers' five in the final frame of regulation and the Black Knights pulled Cataldo from the net with just over two and a half minutes remaining in the game to attempt the man advantage.
The Black Knights levied eight shots in a minute and a half with six of them forcing saves from Krbecek before a penalty in the crease from RIT awarded Army a penalty shot.
Army sent sophomore forward Dylan Wegner out to take on Krbecek and the Nashville native buried the puck past the Tiger's left skate to bring the game tied with 14 seconds left on the clock.
Wegner's goal held through the final seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime where the Tigers found the back of the net for the third time of the night with 66 seconds left on the overtime clock to secure the overtime win and split the series with Army.
