No. 11 Men’s Lacrosse Surges in Second Half to Earn 12-6 Win over Yale

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The No. 11 ranked Army West Point men's lacrosse team (3-0, 0-0 Patriot League) took on the Yale Bulldogs (0-1, 0-0 Ivy League) Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium.
The Black Knights picked up their third win of the season, scoring 10 unanswered goals after falling behind early to deliver a 12-6 comeback win in their first game of the season in front of their home crowd.
The win marks the second consecutive game against Yale in which Army scored seven goals in a single quarter. Army previously scored seven goals in the first quarter on February 19, 2025 at Yale.
Army saw seven different Black Knights put points on the board to out-score Yale 20-6 from 12 goals and eight assists. Senior midfielder Evan Plunkett led all players on the field with six points from two goals and four assists.
Senior defenseman John Sullivan tallied his first career goal and first career assist in Saturday's game against Yale.
Army sent senior goalkeeper Sean Byrne between the pipes where he recorded ten saves for the Black Knights, highlighted by a second half in which he helped Army hold Yale scoreless.
HOW IT HAPPENED
On the chilly Saturday morning at West Point, Yale opened the scoring early in the first quarter with two goals in the first three minutes of action.
The Bulldogs continued to control the momentum in the opening frame, holding the Black Knights to one shot on goal in the first eight minutes of play.
Evan Plunkett got the Black Knights on the board just after the eight-minute mark, scoring his first goal of the season to cut Yale's lead in half.
Both defenses held strong throughout the remainder of the first frame, sending the game into the second quarter with a 2-1 lead for the Bulldogs.
Yale furthered their advantage, scoring two goals in the first two minutes of the second frame.
Army's defense dug in, holding Yale off the board for the next five minutes of play to allow the Black Knights the space necessary to net their second goal of the afternoon.
After a caused turnover by John Sullivan, the senior defenseman hurried down the field and connected with Brayden Fountain by the net, who buried a shot to cut away at the Bulldogs' lead.
One minute after Army's goal, Yale recaptured the momentum as they scored two more goals of their own in 45 seconds, extending their lead to four.
The Black Knights displayed their toughness as Evan Plunkett netted his second goal of the game with four minutes on the clock, bringing Army within three of Yale in the closing minutes of the first half.
As the clock wound down on the first half, Army continued to apply pressure on the Bulldogs' defense heading into the break.
Army was eager to gain control of this game in front of their home crowd as the second half began.
Just two minutes into the half, Fountain scored his second goal of the afternoon with the assist from Evan Plunkett to turn the tide in Army's favor.
Army continued to chip away at the Bulldogs' lead as Fountain scored shortly after the 10 minute mark to bring the Black Knights within one.
Just 38 seconds later, Gunnar Fellows scored his 90th career goal to tie the game at six apiece.
Following a turnover from Yale caused by Robert Simone, Sullivan picked up the ground ball and took it the length of the field to score his first career goal to give Army its first lead of the day at 7-6.
Just over a minute later, the Black Knights fed off their momentum and struck once more as they extended their lead with another goal by Fellows on the assist from Evan Plunkett.
Army scored two more goals in the next four minutes of the third quarter from Hill Plunkett and Tyler Clark to tally six unanswered goals in the last six minutes of the quarter.
The Bulldogs dug in for the fourth quarter as they fought to cut into Army's lead as they led the shots-on-goal battle 4-3 in the final frame, but the Black Knights held off the visiting team as they continued to control the momentum.
Army's offense continued to build on the energy in Michie Stadium as Hill Plunkett scored his second goal of the day midway through the quarter before Aiden Weisenborn got in on the action and scored Army's tenth unanswered goal with just over three and a half minutes left on the clock to secure Army's dominant win over the Bulldogs.
