Filipowicz Finishes Second at Southern Scuffle; Wrestling Sends Six to Podium
January 04, 2026 | Wrestling
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Army West Point wrestling put six on the 2026 Southern Scuffle podium to ring in 2026 at McKenzie Arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.
Â
Gunner Filipowicz—competing just across the state line from his home state of Georgia—made his third consecutive 165 lb Southern Scuffle championship match. However, the junior gave up a takedown in the third period to drop the bout 5-1 to Little Rock's Matty Bianchi.
Â
Filipowicz, however, still managed a 5-1 tournament, with a win over Navy's Dylan Elmore in Saturday's quarterfinals. He also notched a trio of bonus point victories, pinning Appalachian State's Caleb Cady in the Round of 64, defeating Little Rock's Jadyn Johnson by technical fall in the Round of 32 and claiming a major decision over Virginia's Mason Steffanelli in the Round of 16.
Â
Army concluded the two-day event with 91.5 team points, coming in sixth overall among 28 competing programs. Penn State walked away with the team title.Â
Â
Brady Colbert and Lucas Stoddard were on a collision course to meet in the 285 lb third place bout. However, Colbert was named the match winner, with Stoddard placing fourth due to medical forfeit. Only a loss to Penn State's Lucas Cochran spoiled an otherwise perfect tournament for Colbert, with the sophomore going 6-1. Stoddard meanwhile finished the event 5-2, with a win by pin over Andrew Blackburn-Forst of North Dakota State in the second consolation Round of 8.Â
Â
Joining Stoddard in fourth was Conor Collins, at 141 lbs. Collins dropped his first match of the tournament in the Round of 32 but won each of his next six bouts to reach the third place match, which he dropped to Tom Crook of Virginia Tech. Using riding time to his advantage, Collins knocked off Navy's Nick Vafiadis 4-3 in the consolation Round of 4 earlier in his wrestleback run.Â
Â
At 125 lbs, Charlie Farmer took sixth place, with a 5-3 record across the weekend. A 16-3 major decision in the consolation Round of 4 catapulted the Illinois native into the consolation semifinals, but a pair of defeats both there and the fifth place bout solidified his placement.Â
Â
Andrew Christie finished the tournament for Army by placing eighth at 174 lbs. One of the Black Knights' overall highlights Saturday came courtesy of him in the Round of 32, when he upset top-seeded Nick Hamilton of Virginia by pin. Christie followed that result with a sudden victory win in the Round of 16 over North Carolina's Murphy Menke.Â
Â
The junior from Pennsylvania then opened Sunday's action in the second consolation Round of 8, with a win over teammate Cooper Haase before taking a pair of defeats deep in the consolation bracket.
