Wrestling Opens EIWA Action with Win Over American
January 18, 2026 | Wrestling
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point Wrestling won Sunday's EIWA-opening match vs. the American Eagles 22-17 at the United States Military Academy Prep School (USMAPS).
Â
The Black Knights (1-4, 1-0 EIWA) secured their first win of the 2025-26 season, after opening the campaign with four consecutive ranked foes. The victory also served as the first Army dual win for first year Class of 1972 Head Men's Wrestling Coach Troy Nickerson.Â
Â
Army recovered from dropping the initial three bouts, winning five of the ensuing six individual matches. All but one of the Black Knights' wins came in bonus point fashion.Â
Â
Devin Ryan begun the afternoon, with Sunday's action commencing at 133 lbs. While seeing a few openings throughout the course of his bout, Ryan was unable to hold off Raymond Lopez's offensive onslaught and fell by technical fall, 19-4 in the third period.Â
Â
Conor Collins followed for Army at 141 lbs, in an entertaining match featuring five combined reversals. However, a late Jack Maida escape for American sent the bout into sudden victory, with the Eagle wrestler securing a decisive takedown.Â
Â
Next, Ryan Franco took the mat at 149 lbs, and conceded a stalling and riding time point to take a 2-0 defeat to Gage Owen.Â
Â
Joseph Antonio got the Black Knights on the board in the dual with a technical fall at 157 lbs, with three takedown points to win 18-3 over Kaden Milheim right as the second period was about to expire.
Â
Gunner Filipowicz provided Army with its second consecutive technical fall at 165 lbs, narrowly missing out on a pin midway through the second period but tallying the back points to end the bout with a 17-2 win over Austin Craft.Â
Â
Cooper Haase gave Army its first lead of the dual at 174 lbs, with riding time being the factor in clinching an 11-4 major decision at the buzzer over Hunter Hohman, putting the Black Knights ahead 14-11 after surrendering the first 11 team points Sunday.Â
Â
While American would even the dual with a Caleb Campos decision over Dave Barrett at 184, Army jumped back on top with Wolfgang Frable's dominant 16-0 technical fall over Teage Calvin at 197 lbs, featuring three separate back point scores from Frable.
Â
In the penultimate bout, Brady Colbert clinched the dual for Army at heavyweight with a 2-0 decision over Emmanuel Ulrich, with an escape point in the second period and a full period ride in the third.
Â
125 lbs served as the closing match Sunday, with Charlie Farmer within two points deep into the third period before dropping the match to JJ Peace, 7-4.
