WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point wrestling may have been competing at Christl Arena for the first time since December 6, but the Black Knights missed few beats on their way to a 23-12 dual match win over EIWA foe Bucknell.
The victory propels Army to 2-4 overall and 2-0 vs. EIWA opponents, a week after its first win of the year vs. American at USMAPS.
An early sudden victory win and a fall early in the afternoon set the tone for an Army team win that was secured before the final match. The Black Knights totaled six match wins out of 10.
Saturday's action commenced with Conor Collins at 149 lbs, and in spite of a lengthy second period ride, he conceded back points in the third and fell to Riley Bower 4-0.
Joseph Antonio followed at 157 lbs, and with the bout tied in sudden victory, the freshman took advantage of a second stall call on Bucknell's Cade Wirnsberger to win 6-5 and tie the team score.
Looking to give Army its first team lead of the afternoon at 165 lbs, Gunner Filipowicz delivered in emphatic fashion, turning ranked foe Noah Mulvaney on his back from the bottom position and pinning the Bison wrestler just 23 seconds into the second period, giving Army a 9-3 lead in the dual.
Andrew Christie followed on the mat at 174 lbs, but was forced to wrestle on bottom the entirely of period three, and took a 6-3 defeat to Myles Takats.
At 184 lbs, Dave Barrett found himself in a close battle with the Bison's Tyler Bienus, taking the lead in the third period with a takedown before a reversal with under 30 seconds tied the bout once more. After reply review upheld Barrett's takedown, the match went to sudden victory, but Bienus was the one to secure the decisive takedown, tying the dual at the intermission.
Coming out of halftime at 197 lbs, Wolfgang Frable too found himself in a late-bout showdown. And facing a 1-1 stalemate, Frable secured a takedown in the closing seconds to defeat Dillon Bechtold 4-1 and give Army the lead once more in the dual.
Looking to extend the team's lead, Brady Colbert took the mat at heavyweight and did just that, taking a 5-3 lead into the third period holding on for the 5-4 decision, extending the dual lead to 15-9 as the lineup turned over to 125.
Charlie Farmer took neutral in the third period down three points and received a stalling point, but got no closer than 9-7 down the stretch and took the defeat by decision to Kade Davidhesier.
Looking to get Army over the hump in team point, Ethan Berginc pushed nearly the entire 141 lb bout, and was successful in reaching the technical fall threshold with a 19-4 win over Bryce Manera to give Army an insurmountable 20-12 dual lead.
Finally, to send the fans home happy before the snowfall in the Hudson Valley, Braden Basile defeated Dylan Chappell by decision at 141 lbs, 4-2.
