Men’s Basketball Sees Sunday Afternoon Loss Against American

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point men's basketball (7-12, 1-5) played tough but fell short at home inside Christl Arena on Sunday afternoon, falling to the American University Eagles (11-8, 4-2), 67-78.
The loss marks the team's fifth straight loss in league play, and they are still in search of their first win since the start of 2026. The Eagles have also won five of the last six matchups between the two teams, with Army's win in the stretch coming last season at home.
Jacen Holloway led the scoring for the Black Knights, finishing with 21 points, one point shy of his career-high. It was the second game of his career in which Holloway scored 20+ points. He also added four rebounds, three assists, and a career-high three steals.
Kevin McCarthy was the only other player for Army finish in double digits, adding 12 points while shooting 4-6 from the three-point line. Tate Laczkowski led the rebounding efforts with seven rebounds while adding eight points. Ryan Curry also added a team-high six assists with six points.
How It Happened
American came out firing in the first four minutes of the game, shooting 5-7 from the three-point line to take an early 15-4 lead over the Black Knights. Tate Laczkowski added the first bucket, getting a cross-court pass from Ryan Curry. Curry then added a driving layup.
Over the next seven minutes, the Black Knights came storming back, going on a 14-3 run to tie the game up at 18-18 with 9:22 left on the clock.
The run started with a three-pointer from Jaxson Bell through a pass from Kevin McCarthy. Jacen Holloway then added a layup from a dish from Ryan Curry. Tate Laczkowski added a floater as the shot clock expired to get Army to double figures.
Jackson Furman then added his first three-pointer of the afternoon from a pass from Tate Laczkowski. Then Jaxson Bell added a layup through contact, and then Jacen Holloway tied the game at 18-18 on a well-run inbounds play to give Ryan Curry his third assist of the afternoon.
In the next four minutes, the Eagles went on a 6-0 run to retake the lead at 24-18 with 4:04 left in the first half.
The Black Knights kept stride with American in the final four minutes of the first half, scoring eight points to make it a 33-26 game heading into the locker room.
Ryan Curry had four points during that stretch, including a buzzer-beater from Ryan Curry, navigating three Eagle defenders. Tate Laczkowski and Jacen Holloway each added two points during the stretch as well.
To open the second half, American came out on fire just like the start of the game, outscoring Army 11-3 to build their biggest lead of the day at 44-29 with 16:05 left to play. Kevin McCarthy had the lone three points from a pass from Jacen Holloway.
The next four minutes, just like the first half, Army came storming back, outscoring American 19-8 to make it only a 48-52 deficit with 11:21 left to play.
Jacen Holloway started the run with back-to-back layups, with one dish coming from Ryan Curry and another coming from Kevin McCarthy. Then, Jorn Everson added five straight points, converting a three-point play from a dish from Kevin McCarthy.
Jaxson Bell added a three-pointer from a pass from Jorn Everson, then Jacen Holloway added a layup, then passed the ball to Kevin McCarthy, who added another three-pointer. Jorn Everson added another jumper to add seven total points in the run to make it the 48-52 game.
The Eagles threw a punch back in the next four minutes, going on a 15-6 run to take a 67-54 lead with 8:04 left to play. Jacen Holloway had four points during that span, and Tate Laczkowski added a bucket off an assist from Ryan Curry.
Army then began to cut into the Eagles' lead, going on a 10-4 run, including a 7-0 run in a minute to narrow the game back to a seven-point deficit at 64-71 with 3:31 left to play.
Kevin McCarthy led the way during the run with six points, including two three-pointers. Alex Engro added his first points of the day on a layup from an assist from Ryan Curry. Jacen Holloway also added two made shots from the charity stripe.
In the final three minutes, American took back control, outscoring Army 7-3 to take home the 78-67 win over Army. Jacen Holloway had all of Army's point in the final stretch, scoring a tip-in after his miss at the 2:46 mark to make it 71-66, and one last free throw to bring him to 21 points.
Black Knight Bullet Points
- Jacen Holloway led Army with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and went 5-for-6 at the free-throw line while adding four rebounds and four assists.
- Kevin McCarthy scored 12 points while shooting 4-of-6 from the field and a team-best 4-of-6 from three-point range, and he also contributed three assists.
- Tate Laczkowski finished with eight points and a team-high seven rebounds, including four offensive boards, while adding one assist and two steals.
- Jaxson Bell came off the bench to score eight points on 3-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-4 from three-point range.
- Ryan Curry recorded six points on 2-of-9 shooting and led the team with six assists while also collecting four rebounds.
- Jorn Everson provided seven points on 3-of-6 shooting and added two assists in 20 minutes of action. All of Everson's points came in the second half.
- Jackson Furman added three points but struggled from the field, shooting 1-of-7 overall and 1-of-4 from beyond the arc.
- Alex Engro chipped in two points and three rebounds while playing 10 minutes.
- Army finished the day shooting 26-of-59 from the field for 44.1 percent. The Black Knights also shot 7-of-25 from three-point range, finishing at 28.0 percent from beyond the arc.
- Army was efficient at the free-throw line, converting 8-of-9 attempts for 88.9 percent.
- American narrowly outrebounded Army 32–29 in total rebounds. Army grabbed more offensive rebounds than American, 12 to 10, but converted fewer second-chance points (9 to 17).
- The Black Knights committed 17 turnovers while forcing 14 turnovers by American. American scored 15 points off turnovers, while Army scored 14 points off turnovers.

The Black Knights head back on the road for two straight games, first heading into Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, to play the Bucknell University Bison for the first time this season.
Army split the regular season series with the Bison in 2024-25, with Army first earning a 116-110 triple overtime win over Bucknell, the highest point-scoring game in Army program history. On the road, the Black Knights fell to the Bison, 84-53.
