Men’s Soccer Defeats Villanova, 2-0
September 08, 2025 | Men's Soccer
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's soccer team picked up a crucial 2-0 win over Villanova to close out its non-conference slate on Monday night at Malek Stadium, as it extended its point streak to four matches.
Army (2-1-2) came out very slow to open the game and found little to no offensive rhythm in the opening 45 minutes, as it failed to record a single shot on goal going into the halftime break. Villanova (2-1-2) wasn't much better, as it recorded four total shots and just one on goal.
The second half started similar to the opening period, but the Black Knights finally broke through in the 68thminute as Jack Meyer was fouled inside the box resulting in a penalty. Freshman Jack De Simone stepped up for the penalty kick and buried it in the bottom right of the goal. It marked the first collegiate goal of his career and his first game-winning goal. Army is now 2-2 this season on penalty kicks after Ronald Zhai buried one on Friday night against Temple.
Just over five minutes after Army opened the scoring it added its second goal of the night, as Villanova scored an own goal after trying to pass the ball back to the goalie.
With Army leading 2-0 with just under 18 minutes to play, the Wildcats started to apply pressure but were unable to chip into the Black Knights lead.
Michael Guiry recorded his second win of the season, moving to 2-0-1 on the year while allowing just 0.67 goals per game. He made a pair of saves in the win.
Coaches Corner – head coach Brian Plotkin
"I think they wanted it more. I thought we saw that in the second half. They came out a little more connected and hungrier. We talk often about living in the details and I thought it started with our pressing. I am really proud of the group for the fight and relentlessness.
"It was a Big East opponent and that is always a big challenge. For us, there is a pride in playing at home and the opportunity to represent this institution. I think for the group, our maturity started to show. We weren't overly emotional. We were just focused and really connected. For me, that was what was exciting to see… I think if we can continue to fine-tune things, we have a bright future."
