September 13, 2025 | Men's Soccer
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's soccer team put together a dominant defensive performance en route to a 1-0 victory over Boston U., to open conference play at Malek Stadium on Saturday night.
Army (3-1-2) extended its point streak to five matches, while goalkeeper Michael Guiry recorded his second straight shutout.
Both teams opened competition with a strong pace but neither side was able to break through. With just under eight minutes to play in the opening half, Kelly Cooper put the Black Knights ahead with the first goal of his collegiate career on a header than snuck under the crossbar. The goal was assisted by Jack Meyer, who deflected a perfect throw in from Nicholas Berardi. It was Meyer's first career assist.
Outside of the goal, the half was very even. Boston U., led 6-4 in shots. Guiry made two saves in the first 45 minutes.
The Terriers had plenty of opportunities in the second half but couldn't get anything past Guiry, who made six saves to keep the lead intact. On the night, Guiry totaled eight saves and continues to be a key reason for the Black Knight's success this season.
Army finished the night with just two shots on goal but led in possession, controlling the ball for 52 percent of the night.
Coaches Corner – Head coach Brian Plotkin
"It's the best way to start [league play]. We want shutouts and the team is committed to defending right now. We'll continue to find our ways to get goals. The team is doing a good job, we're creating chances. As we continue on, we will continue to evolve and get better. Great first round of Patriot League play."
Plotkin on Cooper's goal
"It was an awesome moment for him. His younger brother is on [Boston U]. His family was here. Pretty cool moment for him. He gets bragging rights at home for a little bit for the year. His maturity has been awesome. Watching his development over the last six-to-eight months has been incredible. He has a really bright future… He is going to be an incredible Army officer one day: there's no doubt about that. Fortunately, we have him as one of our Army soccer players for a few more years."
