August 29, 2025 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
ORONO, Maine – Army West Point cross country struggled in its opening event of the year on Friday morning, as both the men's and women's teams were defeated by Maine in a dual battle at Saxl Park.
The women's side had four top 10 finishers but were defeated 18-40, as Maine swept the top four spots. On the men's side, the Black Knights lost 15-45 with their best finisher coming in sixth place.
Alma Lazo Cazares had the best women's finish for Army, recording a time of 18:30.0 – good for fifth place. Lindsay Cook and Mia Royall finished behind in sixth and seventh place. Michael Alvarez had the best finish for the men, recording a sixth-place time of 25:41.0. Ivar Hokanson, Cooper McNee and Matthew Gorman rounded out the top 10 for the Black Knights.
Coaches Corner – head coach Mike Smith
"Today marked the 10th year that we have come up to Maine to compete in a dual meet against the University of Maine. We had cool conditions this morning and a fair course that is all grass. Our purpose with this meet has always been to see our plebes compete for the first time and to measure the potential of our developmental athletes to contribute to the varsity team. Both of our lineups today were largely made up of our plebes and yearlings and there were some bright spots out there in what ended up being a pretty one-sided competition on both sides. We have our starting point now and we can get down to the business of putting in the work to get ready for the championship meets in October and November."
