Baseball Drops Series Finale at Bucknell, Locks into No. 3-Seed
April 27, 2025 | Baseball
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Army West Point Baseball dropped its series rubber matchup at the Bucknell Bison Sunday, locking into the No. 3-seed at the upcoming Patriot League Baseball Championships.
Despite running out to an early three-run lead at Depew Field, the Black Knights gave up eight runs in the fourth and fell 10-6.
Army concludes the Patriot League regular season 14-11. The team has four non-conference games remaining before the postseason commences.
The Black Knights rallied in the final inning to put the tying run at the plate, but couldn't score in the frame.
Starting pitcher Joe Valchar kept the Bison off the scoreboard during his first three innings and struck out three batters. However, he was still on the hook for the decision. Robbie Penswick followed in relief for a trio of strikeouts across 3.1 frames. Kevin Reavey recorded the game's final four outs.
Army displayed its small ball capabilities in Sunday's early innings. William Parker struck out in the first, but the third strike wasn't corralled by the Bucknell catcher and an E2 was recorded on the throw to first base, allowing Addison Ainsworth to score from third.
Justin Lehman led off the second with a walk, before scoring two at-bats later on an Ethan Ellis RBI groundout. An inning later, Parker converted a leadoff single to a run—once again off Ellis' bat—after reaching scoring position via a Jack Quinlan sacrifice bunt.
In the sixth, Army trimmed a five-run deficit down to two, after Ainsworth recorded a two-run double down the left field line and Parker recorded a two-out RBI. Bucknell would create breathing room however in the seventh off two unearned runs.
By the Numbers
2-for-5: Barr, Ainsworth and Parker each went 2-for-5 at the top of the lineup, with Ainsworth collecting two RBIs and Parker having one.
2-for-3: Coleson Titus was 2-for-3 with a walk.
2: Ellis had two RBIs Sunday.
Black Knight Notes
Ellis batted seventh in the DH spot, and made his first start since playing right field vs. Marist April 9.
