Softball Swept in Final Midweek Doubleheader at Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — Army West Point Softball (25-19, 8-1) were swept in their final midweek doubleheader, seeing 3-7 and 5-8 losses to the Iona University Gaels (21-14, 13-3).
In game one, the Black Knights gained an early 2-0 lead, but the Black Knights would be held scoreless for the rest of the game while Iona scored seven unanswered runs, ultimately seeing a 7-3 loss.
Leila Hurst led the hitting for the Black Knights in game one, hitting a two-run home run in the second inning to give Army its initial lead. Hurst finished the game with one hit, one run, one walk and two RBIs.
Annie Christiana, Taylor Brown, Ashton White and Maaika Dones each added hits for the Black Knights in the first game as well.
As for the pitching, Breanna Izzo received the start and pitched 3.2 innings, then Amanda Eaglin came in as relief and threw for 2.1 innings. The two combined to allow seven runs, 10 hits, and six walks while only having three strikeouts. Izzo went on to receive the loss.
As for game two, the Black Knights and the Gaels battled back and forth, with both teams combining for 22 hits, with Army ultimately falling 5-8.
In game two, Breanna Izzo, who came in as relief, also earned her 200th career strikeout, becoming the eighth Black Knight to do that in career history.
GAME 1
To start the top of the first inning, the Black Knights went three-and-out with a ground out, foul out and the first strikeout of the day for starter Breanna Izzo.
In the bottom of the inning, the Gaels started with two bunt singles. But then Emma Murchison and Taylor Brown were about to catch a runner stealing, then a strikeout and popping up retired the inning.
The Black Knights were able to get their first runs on the board in the top of the second inning. The first two Army batters fouled out and grounded out and fouled out, then Maisi Sigler drew a two-out walk, setting the stage for Leila Hurst.
Then, Leila Hurst hit her first home run since March 15, hitting a deep shot to left center, giving Army a 2-0 lead.
The Gaels added a hit in the bottom of the second inning, but the Black Knights forced three consecutive putouts to keep their lead.
Taylor Brown and Ashton White both added singles to the left side in the top of the third inning but were both left on base.
Iona put their first two runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning, tying the game at 2-2. The Gaels hit a single and drew a walk, then hit a bases-clearing double to tie the game.
Army was unable to get its hitting going in the top of the fourth inning, with two pop-outs and a strikeout forcing the Black Knights to go three-and-out.
The Gaels added another two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, making it a 4-2 game.
The bottom frame started with Army forcing a ground out, then Iona added another hit, Breanna Izzo added a strikeout, and then the Gaels drew a walk, causing Amanda Eaglin to enter the game in relief. The Gaels would add two more walks and a two-RBI single to give them their first lead of the game.
Maaika Dones was able to add her first hit of the day with a single to third base, then stole second, but the rest of the Black Knights could not get on base, leaving Dones stranded.
In the bottom of the inning, Amanda Eaglin and the rest of the Black Knight defense forced three ground outs in four pitches, quickly sending the game to the top of the sixth.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Black Knights went three-and-out for the third time in the game. In the bottom of the inning, the Gaels grew their lead by three runs on three hits, all singles and a walk, to make it a 7-2 deficit for the Black Knights to come back from in the final inning.
The Black Knights were able to score one run in the final inning, but their comeback attempt fell short, ending the game with a final score of 3-7.
The final frame started with a pop-up from Maisi Sigler, and then Leila Hurst was able to get on base for the second time of the day by drawing a walk. Breanna Coonfare reached on a fielder's choice, then Maaika Dones reached, then Annie Christiana singled up the middle to make it a 3-7 game.
GAME 2
To start game two, the Black Knights scored three runs off five hits, gaining an early 3-0 lead.
Annie Christiana started the inning with a lead-off single, and then Emma Murchison followed directly behind her with a double down the left-field line. Taylor Brown then tripled to left center, sending Christiana and Murchison home to make it a two-RBI triple.
Leila Hurst then got her third RBI of the day with a single to left center, sending Brown home to make it a 3-0 game. Tayten Moore also added a single in the inning, but she and Hurst were left stranded to end the inning.
As for the bottom of the inning, Iona added three runs of their own off two hits and two walks, tying the game back at 3-3.
Katelyn Flanders started the inning with a walk, then two wild pitches allowed the runner to advance to third. Another drawn walk then brought in Libby Levendowski out of the bullpen for Army.
The Gaels got their first run of the game with a passed ball, advancing runners home to second. The defense forced a pop-up, but then a single and a double from Iona brought two runners in, making it a 3-3 game.
Sienna Tepley led off the inning with a single up the middle but was left on base after three straight outs. As for Iona, they scored another three runs in the second, making it a 6-3 deficit.
Iona got on base to start the inning with a single, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Then another single added the first run of the inning. Another Gael got on base drawing a walk off of Levendowski, then the two runners advanced into score position on a passed ball.
The home team hit another sacrifice bunt, this time scoring a runner, then another single made it a 6-3 game. Another walk and hit allowed caused Breanna Izzo to be called out of the bullpen, and the Black Knights finally ended the inning with a strikeout, leaving three left on base.
In the top of the third, Maisi Sigler added another hit for the Black Knights singling to right field, and then Leila Hurst got on base drawing a walk. Tayten Moore advanced the runners to second and third on a ground out, then Samantha Sims loaded the bases by drawing a walk, but ultimately, the bases were left loaded.
The Gaels would get one hit off Izzo in the bottom of the third inning, but for the first time in the game, did not score a run in the inning.
Army got back on the board in the fourth inning, making it a 4-6 game. Emma Murchison started the inning with a double, then advanced to third on a single from Ashton White. Then Taylor Brown added a single to cut the lead back down to two runs.
The Gaels would score another run in the bottom of the fourth off one walk, a fielder's chance advancing the runner, and then a hit, making it a 4-7 game.
The Black Knights would score again in the fifth off two hits. Leila Hurst led off the inning with a double, then Sienna Tepley was able to bring the run home with an RBI single to make it a 5-7 deficit.
In the fifth inning, the Gaels would add another run off one hit and two errors, making it a 5-8 game, but the damage was minimized by a strikeout to close the inning from Breanna Izzo, marking her 200th strikeout in her career.
The Black Knights went three-and-out in the top of the sixth while the Gaels only had one hit, a double, but two putouts and another strikeout from Izzo stranded the runner on the base paths, sending the game into the seventh inning.
In the seventh, Caitlyn Newburn was able to get on base, drawing a walk, and then Tayten Moore came in to pinch run. Samantha Sims then came to the plate, drawing another walk, but the two were left on base, ending the game with a final score of 5-8.
ON DECK
Up next, the Black Knights will face their biggest challenge of league play on Saturday and Sunday as they head to Boston, Massachusetts to take on reigning Patriot League champions and the current number one team in league standings, the Boston University Terriers.
Army will search to earn its first win against Boston U since 2021, with the Terriers earning wins in the last 15 matchups.
The series against the Terriers in Boston begins on Saturday, April 19, with first pitches scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., with the final game of the series set to start at 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 20. All games will stream live on ESPN+.
