Softball Gains First Win Over Boston U Since 2021, Splits Doubleheader with Terriers

BOSTON, Mass. — Army West Point Softball (26-20, 9-2) spilt the series-opening doubleheader against the Boston University Terriers (28-14, 10-1) on Saturday.
The Black Knights and Terriers battled back and forth, exchanging both hits and errors, but Army ultimately fell in a 1-4 loss to open the Saturday doubleheader.
Caitlyn Newburn led the hitting in game one with two hits, one single and one double. Ashton White, Taylor Brown, Samantha Sims and Sienna Tepley each added hits. Tepley recorded the only run while Emma Murchison boasted the RBI.
Both Breanna Izzo and Amanda Eaglin split pitching duties in game one, each pitching three innings. The two combined to allow five hits and four runs, with Breanna Izzo having two strikeouts and Amanda Eaglin adding three strikeouts. Izzo went on to take the loss.
Army turned the tides in game two, using a five-run fifth inning to run-rule Boston University, giving the Terriers its first loss in Patriot League play and Army its first win over BU since 2021, 10-1.
Three Black Knights served as the catalyst of the offense, with Annie Christiana, Taylor Brown and Caitlyn Newburn each adding three hits in the second game. Taylor Brown had a team-high four runs, while Caitlyn Newburn played cleanup with a team-high three RBIs.
Katelyn Flanders and the Black Knights' defense kept the Terriers' offense stagnant, only allowing five hits, one earned run and two walks in only 79 pitches, earning her eighth win of the season.
GAME 1
The Black Knights got their first hit in the top of the first inning with Ashton White hitting a single to left field with two outs in the inning, but was left on base.
In the bottom of the inning, the Terriers scored two runs off two hits and one error, making it a 2-0 game by the end of the first inning.
The first runner got on base on a hit-by-pitch, then the second got on base with a single to left field. The Boston U hit a two-out single, then an error in right field allowed the two runners to score.
In the second inning, the Black Knights went three and out, while the Terriers earned one hit and forced one error to start the inning. With two runners in scoring position, Ashton White and Emma Murchison threw a runner out at home to stop a run. Then, Breanna Izzo added two strikeouts swinging to end the inning.
In the top of the third inning, Sienna Tepley got the second hit for the Black Knights hitting a single to center field. Then Annie Christiana was able to reach after a SAC bunt turned into an error, allowing Sienna Tepley to reach third.
Emma Murchison flew out to right field, allowing enough time for Sienna Tepley to run home and put Army's first run on the board, making it a 2-1 game.
In the bottom of the inning, Breanna Izzo and the Black Knight defense forced a three-and-out to retire the inning.
Caitlyn Newburn started the fourth inning with a single to shortstop, getting on base. Then Taylor Brown reached on a fielder's choice, but Newburn was able to advance to second two to an error from the shortstop. Maaika Dones then entered the game to pinch-run for Newburn.
Maisi Sigler grounded out, but was able to advance the runners to second and third through a ground out, then Leila Hurst hit a fly out to right field, Maaika Dones would make it home, but then was called out for leaving base early, ending the top of the inning.
To start the bottom of the third inning, the Terriers forced a walk and then added a triple, making it a 3-1 deficit for Army. Izzo was taken out of the game, with Amanda Eaglin entering in her place.
Boston U would add one for a hit, allowing the Terriers to add one more run to make it a 4-1 game. The Terriers would load the bases, but the Black Knights were able to get out of the inning without allowing another run.
In the fifth inning, each team had one runner get on base, Annie Christiana reaching on an error and a Terrier reading a walk. Both teams left the inning runless, while Amanda Eaglin finished the inning with two strikeouts looking.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Black Knights were able to get two hits, with Caitlyn Newburn hitting a double and Taylor Brown hitting a single, but both were left on base. The Terriers had two batters reach base, one on an error and one on a fielder's choice, but the Black Knights ended the inning, sending it to the top of the seventh.
In the top of the seventh, Samantha Sims led off the inning with a bunt single, then Sienna Tepley reached on a fielder's choice. Annie Christiana then reached on an error, advancing Tepley to second, and then both advanced another base through an Emma Murchison ground out. The game ended on a strikeout, giving Army a 4-1 loss.
GAME 2
To open game two of the doubleheader, the Black Knights had two runs off of three hits, giving Army an early edge to open the game.
Army started the inning with back-to-back hits, with Annie Christiana singling to third base and Taylor Brown singling to right field. The two then both advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch.
Ashton White then hit a sacrifice fly to right field allowing Christiana to score and Brown to advance to third. Then Caitlyn Newburn hit a ground out to the shortstop, allowing Brown to run home and the Black Knights to take a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, the Black Knights allowed one walk, one hit and one error, but kept the Terriers off the board by forcing a fly out, pop up and ground out.
Army went three and out in the second inning, the only inning where there Black Knights did not record a hit or run. The Terriers drew one walk off Flanders, but the Black Knights defense protected the diamond to keep their lead at 2-0.
In the third inning, the Black Knights scored two runs off two hits, ultimately leaving three runners on the base paths, but not before Army took a 4-0 lead.
Annie Christiana got on base to start the inning by being hit by a pitch, then Taylor Brown got on base by drawing a walk. The fourth ball was dropped, allowing Christiana to advance to third. Ashton White then reached on a fielder's choice, with the Terriers throwing Christiana out at home plate.
Caitlyn Newburn recorded the first hit in the inning by singling through the right side, loading the bases. Two batters later, Leila Hurst hit a single to send Taylor Brown home, then Tayten Moore drew a bases-loaded walk to give Army a 4-0 lead.
Boston U would score its first and only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning, scoring one run off of two hits, but Katelyn Flanders and the Black Knight defense left the other runner stranded, cutting it to a 4-1 lead for Army.
In the fourth inning, Army would score one more additional run off three hits, making it a 5-1 game in Army's favor.
Annie Christiana started the inning with a single to left field, then Taylor Brown hit a double down the third base line to advance both runners into scoring position. Then for the second time in the game, Ashton White reached on a fielder's choice, with BU throwing out Christiana at home.
Caitlyn Newburn then added her second RBI of the day, singling to third base, allowing Brown to score her second run of the day.
Boston U would add another two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Army's defense kept the Terriers from reaching home plate.
Army's bats would catch on fire in the fifth inning, with Army scoring five runs off of six hits and two errors, growing their lead to 10-1, taking all the momentum from the Terriers.
Tayten Moore started the hitting in the inning with a single, then Maaika Dones hit a single, and then an error by the Terriers' first baseman allowed Dones to advance to second and for Moore to score the first run of the inning.
Sienna Tepley then hit a single up the middle, moving Dones to third. Then Annie Christiana got her third hit and first RBI of the day, bringing Dones home and advancing Tepley to third.
Taylor Brown added a single to center field at the next at bat, then sent Christiana to third and allowed Tepley to add her first run of the game. Brown would then advance to second on a wild pitch.
During the next at-bat, Ashton White reached base for the third time in the game, but this time by another error by BU, allowing Christiana to score.
Caitlyn Newburn would get her third hit and RBI of the game during the next at-bat singling to right field, capping off Army's five runs and giving Army a decisive 10-1 lead.
The Terriers had to score two runs in the bottom of the fifth to prevent a run rule, but a three and out forced by the Black Knights' defense, featuring a diving catch from Annie Christiana, gave Army the statement win.

Up next, the Black Knights will aim to take the rubber match game and tie the Terriers for first place in the Patriot League standings as they will play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday.
The series conclusion against the Terriers in Boston will begin at 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, with the game streaming live on ESPN+.
