Women's Lacrosse Opens Conference Play with 18-8 Victory over Boston University

WEST POINT, NY - Army West Point women's lacrosse (5-1, 1-0 Patriot League) asserted itself in its conference opener with an 18-8 victory over Boston University (4-3, 0-1 Patriot League) on Saturday afternoon from Michie Stadium.
Army pulled ahead with an eight-goal outburst in the second quarter after the score was knotted at two through 15 minutes of play.
Junior Brigid Duffy led the Black Knights with five goals to go along with two assists, seven draw controls, four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Duffy set a new program record for career draw controls in the process with her 224th career draw control. Duffy also tied the program record for career ground balls with 99.
Junior Allison Reilly added four goals and four draw controls while junior Sarah Chernik dominated in the circle with ten draw controls while helping Army to a 21-8 advantage for the game.
Lindsey Serafine picked up her fifth victory of the season in the cage for Army, stopping six shots while allowing six goals.
Senior Gabrielle Mirak chipped in a hat trick off the bench and junior Chloe Garrett logged three assists for a four-point effort. Sophomore defender Jackie Braceland scored her first career goal in the second half while junior Brooke Stocku added her first career assist while tabbing her second career goal.
Boston got out on the front foot with a goal on the first possession of the game as the teams scored just twice each in the opening frame. Duffy and sophomore Ryan Remaly got the scoring started for Army, with the teams combining for just seven shots on goal in the first.
Army broke out in the opening minutes of the second with Reilly notching the first goal before back-to-back tallies from Duffy to make it 5-2. After a Boston response, Duffy marked her fourth goal of the game and third from he eight-meter at just the 10:18 mark of the second quarter.
Army would end the half on a 5-0 run, as Reilly and sophomore Geneva Milch Cesoni each tabbed a pair of goals in the final five minutes before the break. The Black Knights outshot the Terriers 18-8 in the second frame while winning eight of ten draw controls.
The second half saw Army stay in control, a Reilly and Garrett opened the half with goals to extend the run to a 7-0 spurt. Boston answered with the next two goals midway through he period, Mirak ended the frame with a pair of goals to put Army ahead 14-5 heading into the fourth.
The clock began to run following the ten-goal lead given by Stocku's tally of the season, as Braceland netted the next in transition as Army had eight different goalscorers throughout the game.
Mirak netted her hat trick with a third goal before Duffy put the finishing touches on the victory with a late goal to bring the final score to 18-8. Junior Sherry Feng saw action in goal for the Black Knights in the final 5:33.
Army will return on the road to face No. 15 Loyola Maryland next Saturday at noon in Baltimore, Md.
