Softball Swept in Second Day of Action at Spring Break Challenge

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Army West Point Softball (9-10) saw two losses in its second day at the Spring Break Challenge, falling to the Jacksonville University Dolphins (13-10) and the North Florida University Osprey (20-8).
In game one against the Dolphins, three errors and a four-run second inning went on to haunt the Black Knights, as Jacksonville went on to take the second game between the two on the weekend, 7-2. Katelyn Flanders went on to take the loss for the Black Knights, moving her to a 2-1 record on the season.
As for the matchup against the host team, the Black Knights were shut out, only recording two hits in the game. The first hit was recorded by Leila Hurst and the second hit was from Ashton White. Breanna Izzo took the loss after starting and pitching through 4.1 innings.
Sienna Tepley led the way for the Black Knights recording three hits on the day, all in the first game against Jacksonville.
Caitlyn Newburn finished the day with two hits and recorded two RBIs for the Black Knights.
Taylor Brown finished the day with one hit and one walk, being responsible for Army's two runs on the day.
GAME 1
The Black Knights would get the first run of the game against the Dolphins, taking a 1-0 lead through the first and second innings.
Scoring came courtesy of Taylor Brown and Caitlyn Newburn. Taylor Brown hit a lead-off single to start the game, then advanced to second on a ground out from Annie Christiana. Then Caitlyn Newburn earned her first RBI of the day, singling up the middle to allow Brown to advance home.
Army would not score in the second, but the Black Knight defense kept the Dolphins at bay with five putouts and one strikeout courtesy of Katelyn Flanders.
The Dolphins made their first big move in the third inning. The Black Knights were held scoreless again, but there was some moment on the base pads courtesy of Annie Christiana forcing a walk and stealing second base.
The bottom of the third started with a strikeout for Flanders, but three errors and two doubles allowed the Dolphins to quickly gain a 3-1 lead.
Libby Levendowaki went in on relief for Flanders, but the Dolphins would go on to score one more unearned run, ultimately dropping the Black Knights into a 1-4 hole.
In the fourth inning, Sienna Tepley hit a lead-off single, but then was caught stealing and the Black Knights were help runless in the fourth inning.
Jacksonville put more runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, with the Dolphins recording a home run, walk and a double to eventually let the Dolphins add two runs to take a 6-1 lead.
The Black Knights were still held scoreless in the next two innings, but Caitlyn Newburn and Sienna Tepley each recorded a single for their second and third hits of the game, respectively.
The Dolphins would go on and score one more run in the bottom of the sixth, making it a 1-6 deficit for the Black Knights heading into the final frame.
Army would be able to get one more run across the home plate. Taylor Brown started with a walk, then Maisi Sigler grounded out to help advance Brown to second. Ashton White got her first hit of the day with a single sending Brown to third, then Caitlyn Newburn sealed the run with a sacrifice fly to send Taylor Brown home.
The next batter for the Black Knights, Leila Hurst, then flied out to centerfield, ending the inning, therefore ending the game with a 2-7 final score in favor of Jacksonville.
GAME 2
In the matchup against the Ospreys, the Black Knights started the first inning going three and out.
Meanwhile, on the other side, North Florida got its first run of the day through a solo home run. The Ospreys would go on to load the bases in the bottom of the first inning, but the Black Knights and Breanna Izzo were able to get out of the inning with a ground out and strikeout.
The teams continued to hold each other scoreless through the next three innings, with the Black Knights going three and out every inning up until the top of the fifth inning.
Leila Hurst put the Black Knights's first hit on the board in the top of the fifth, singling to center field. But the next two batters would strike out, stranding Hurst on base.
North Florida grew their lead in the fifth inning, combining for four runs in the inning. It started with a single, then a base-clearing double. The Ospreys added a walk and then a base-clearing triple to take a 4-0 lead. Amanda Eaglin then entered the game as relief. The Ospreys scored on one more ground out, taking a 5-0 heading into the sixth inning.
The Black Knights did see some base action in the sixth and seventh innings. Taylor Brown was able to reach second in the sixth inning through two fielding errors but was also left stranded on base.
Then in the seventh inning, Ashton White hit a lead-off single but was also left stranded, ending the game at a 5-0 final score in North Florida's favor.

The Black Knights will play their final game of the Spring Break Challenge on Sunday.
The rematch with the Ospreys is scheduled for a 9 a.m. first pitch with the game also streaming on ESPN+.
