Softball Finished Day One of Mount Softball Invitational 1-1

EMMITSBURG, Md. — Army West Point Softball (10-11) finished the first day of the Mount Softball Invitational 1-1, with a loss against the UAlbany Great Danes (4-11) and a win over the Mount Saint Mary's Mountaineers (5-12).
In the first game against the Great Danes, errors haunted the Black Knights, with Army ultimately falling 4-6. The Black Knights ultimately allowed eleven hits and four errors in the game, with four of the Great Danes's six runs being unearned runs.
In the second game against the Mountaineers, the Black Knights turned the tides, scoring 10 runs off of 14 hits, all while having no errors of their own, ending the game at 10-0 in the fifth inning. The Black Knights' pitching and defense was stifling, only allowing three runs and a six-run fifth inning sealed the game for the Black Knights.
In the first game, Ashton White lead the hitters with a .750 with one RBI and one double. Leila Hurst also had a strong performance in the first game, batting .500 with two hits and two runs.
As for the hitting fest against Mount Saint Mary's, it was freshman Tayten Moore with three hits on three at-bats to help propel the Black Knights' win, while adding two runs and one RBI.
Four other Black Knights had two hits, Taylor Brown, Ashton White, Maisi Sigler and Maaika Dones. White's two hits were both doubles, with Moore also adding a double of her own.
Breanna Izzo highlighted the pitching staff for the Black Knights earning her sixth win of the season, only allowing three hits with three strikeouts, not allowing a single walk.
In game one, Amanda Eaglin received the start and Libby Levendoski entered in the seventh inning as relief.
GAME 1
The Great Danes took control in the first inning, scoring one run off of one error. The Black Knights were able to get two outs. Then disaster struck after a UAlbany single that turned into a stolen base to second, which then turned to two straight errors to allow UAlbany to score.
Both teams held each other scoreless up until the bottom of the third, where Army scored their first run of the game. Taylor Brown singled, and then Annie Christiana grounded out to send Brown to second. Ashton White earned her first RBI of the day with her first of three doubles, sending Brown home and tying the game at 1-1.
UAlbany scored in the next half-inning, making it a 2-1 lead in their favor.
It started with a single and a double, followed by a ground out. Ashton White and Sam Rodgers were able to prevent one run through a fielder's choice, getting a Great Dane out at home, but the next batter hit a single for UAlbany's second run of the day.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Army struck back and tied the game at 2-2. Leila Hurst started with a single, then advanced through a single from Sienna Tepley. Then, Maisi Sigler hit into a double play but ultimately was able to advance Hurst home.
The Great Danes scored again in the top of the fifth, earning another unearned run off of a Black Knights' error to take a 3-2 lead. Any was held scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, then UAlbany scored in the top of the sixth from an RBI single.
Despite trailing two runs, Army battled back to tie the game one again at 4-4.
It once again started with a Leila Hurst single, followed by another hit from Sienna Tepley. Then Emma Murchison entered the game as a pinch hitter, and despite being out at first, advanced Hurst and Tepley into scoring position. Samantha Sims capitalized earning a two RBI single, tying the game.
Then in the top of the seventh, after pitching six innings with four strikeouts, Levendoski came in the seventh inning. Ultimately, the Great Dames took advantage of two walks to start the inning, with the Great Danes using a double and error to advance their runners to score two runs, making it a 6-4 game.
In the bottom of the final frame, the Black Knights were able to get two on base after a ground out with an Ashton White single and Caitlyn Newburn forcing a walk. Then Army's rally attempt was cut short by a double play.
GAME 2
Both teams were held scoreless in the first two innings, with Breanna Izzo having two strikeouts in the first two innings.
Army scored its first two runs in the top of the third inning. Annie Christiana was the first to reach base off of a hit-by-pitch, then advanced to second on a passed ball. Then Ashton White had her second double of the day, sending Annie Christiana home for the first run of the game.
Leila Hurst was next to get on base after getting hit by a pitch, then both advanced another base on another passed ball. Maisi Sigler got her first RBI of the game, grounding out to the shortstop, and they allowed White to go home.
Mount Saint Mary's went three and out in the bottom of the third inning, then Army would extend its lead in the top of the third with two runs.
The top of the fourth started with a single from Tayten Moore, then an error from the Mountaineer sent Sam Bocis to second and Tayten Moore to third. Maaika Dones would single on the next at bat, allowing Tayten Moore to earn a run. Taylor Brown would single on the next at bat, sending Bocis home to give Army a 4-0 lead.
The Black Knights's defense continued to excel in the bottom of the fourth, with the defense adding two putouts and Breanna Izzo earning a strikeout to end the inning in three batters.
Army would dominate in the top of the fifth, earning six runs off seven hits, only leaving one baserunner on base.
Leila Hurst started the inning with a lead-off single, with Maisi Sigler and Sienna Tepley also adding singles to load the bases.
Tayten Moore added to the hitting barrage with an RBI single, making it a 5-0 game. Maaika Dones would add an RBI single of her own to allow Sigler to score. All the runners would advance on a passed ball, including Tepley to home, making it a 7-0 game.
Annie Christiana would add another single to allow Tayten Moore to add a run. Ashton White then had the only extra-base hit of the inning, hitting a base-clearing two RBI double to make it a 10-0 game.
The Black Knights were able to close the door on the home team in the bottom of the fifth, run-ruling the Mountaineers and gaining their first win of the tournament.

The Black Knights enter the final day of play at the Mount Softball Invitational on Saturday with rematches with both UAlbany and Mount Saint Mary's.
The rematch with the Great Danes is scheduled for an 11 a.m. first pitch and the rematch against the Mountaineers is scheduled for 3 p.m. with the game also streaming on ESPN+.
