Baseball Sweeps Bucknell in Doubleheader Behind Barr’s Record Day
March 29, 2025 | Baseball
Barr went a combined 8-for-9 with a walk across the two games, tying a mark previously set by Walker Gorham in 2005.
In both games, Trey Ates was the winning pitcher. William Parker also had a three-run home run in each matchup.
With the wins, Army returns to above .500 in league play, moving to 6-5.
Game 1
A doubleheader sweep may have looked unlikely for Army to casual observers after one frame.
Despite allowing seven runs in the top of the first, the Black Knights won the rest of the seven-inning contest by 13 runs to win 14-8.
John McKillop made the first dent into the early deficit in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly before Jack Quinlan recorded an RBI double.
Army took the lead in the second with a six-run inning, commenced by a two-run Thomas Schreck home run, his first homer of the year.
After Barr doubled down the left field line to score Ainsworth and make it 7-5, McKillop singled up the middle to score Barr, Zac Farrell etched an RBI double and Coleson Titus recorded a sacrifice fly.
Bucknell tied the game in the top of the third, but Army took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning, on Parker's first three-run homer of the day. Titus added another run in the inning with an RBI single to make it 12-8.
Kevin Luke scored as a pinch-runner on a sixth inning wild pitch, before Farrell had a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
Bryce Brownlee started the game on the mound and pitched 3.2 frames, striking out two batters. Ates recorded two outs in relief before Robbie Penswick picked up an eight-out save.
Game 2
Army sought to apply the pressure in Saturday's nine-inning nightcap, and did just that in a 9-7 win to sweep the doubleheader.
Like in Game 1, Bucknell scored in the top of the first. Unlike in Game 1 however, the damage was limited to just one run, and Army took the lead in the bottom half of the inning off RBI singles from McKillop and Titus.
The Bison made it 2-2 in the fourth, before Parker's second three-run blast of the day made it 5-2 in the bottom of the inning.
Critical junctures in the fifth inning set the tone for the remainder of the game. With Bucknell having pushed the tying runs across to make it 5-5, the bases were loaded with one out before Ates induced an inning-ending double play.
Then in the bottom half of the inning, Barr recorded the most important base hit of his unforgettable day, with a two-out, bases-clearing, three-RBI triple on a 2-2 count. An infield single from Parker an at-bat later scored Barr and made it 9-5, a lead big enough to withstand Bison runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Joe Valchar was given the start in Game 2 and struck out two batters. Walker Calvo made a bullpen appearance before Ates was brought on for the second time Saturday. Like in Game 1, an eight-out save was registered, this time by Kevin Reavey, who also struck out three batters.
By the Numbers
53: Barr increased his batting average by 53 points Saturday, from .250 before the doubleheader to .303 afterwards.
4: The junior from Sarasota, Fla. drove in four total runs across both games, including his two-out, three-run triple in the nightcap. He also crossed the plate seven times.
7: Despite Barr's historic efforts, he still trailed Parker in RBIs on the day, with the junior from Hopedale, Mass. driving in seven runs. Six of those came on his pair of three-run homers.
13: The Black Knights drew 13 walks across both games, led by Farrell with four.
15: Army's pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts combined across the matchups, led by Ates with six total, two in Game 1 and four in Game 2
Black Knight Notes
In both games, Ainsworth batted in the leadoff spot for the first time in his Army career.
In the daycap, Army batted around in the second inning for the seventh time this season, sending 11 batters to the plate. They also sent nine batters to the plate in the third.
Titus moved from third base to catcher in Game 1, getting behind the plate for the first time since February 28 at Air Force. He stayed in that position as the starting catcher in Game 2.
After starting the day at second base, Andrzejewski moved to third base in Game 1 and remained there for Game 2, for his first start at the hot corner since February 28 at Air Force.
The five hits from Barr in Game 1 were the most recorded by a Black Knight in a single game this season, and the first five-hit game since Parker recorded five hits at Holy Cross last season on April 17.
Valchar's four innings pitched in Game 2 represented a career-high.
Parker had two home runs across a singular doubleheader for the second time over the past four twin bills, after hitting a homer in both the daycap and nightcap previously at Lafayette March 22.
