No. 3 Men’s Lacrosse Toppled by Boston U. 10-9 in Overtime

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The impressive start to the no. 3 Army West Point men's lacrosse (7-1, 3-1 Patriot League) team's season suffered its first blow of the season on Saturday as the Black Knights fell 10-9 to Boston University in overtime. The Black Knights put up a strong first half, holding a 6-5 lead at halftime that the Terriers brought to a tie in the second half before the visitors claimed the overtime win.
Army spread out its offense with six different team members finding the back of the net in Saturday's contest. Jackson Eicher, Hill Plunkett, and Brayden Fountain led the way with two apiece.
The Black Knights were strong in the faceoff against the Terriers, winning 13 of the day's faceoffs compared to Boston's nine.
Junior goalkeeper Sean Byrne was an impact player from the start for Army, facing 27 shots on goal and putting up 18 saves in his 61 minutes in net for the Black Knights.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The history between the two teams was palpable from the first whistle as Army and Boston U. took to the field in Michie Stadium on Saturday. The Terriers opened the scoring with eight minutes and 25 seconds remaining on the clock in the first quarter, but the Black Knights were ready to battle as Keagan Treacy brought Army tied just 11 seconds later with his first goal of the season.
After withstanding a barrage of shots from the Terriers, Hill Plunkett pushed Army into the lead with three and a half minutes remaining on the clock to give the Black Knights a 2-1 lead heading into the first break with five saves from Sean Byrne in goal to maintain Army's advantage.
Robert Simone took Army ahead to a 3-1 lead just 18 seconds into the second quarter on a set up from Christian Fournier but the Terriers eliminated that deficit less than two minutes later to bring things tied at 3-3 to set the tone for the knock-down drag-out of a game that would play out on Army's home field. Jackson Eicher pushed Army to the lead once more with an assist to AJ Pilate but the Terriers closed the gap two minutes later to bring things tied at 4-4.
Boston moved into the lead with just over eight minutes eclipsed in the quarter, but Eicher kept Army in the fight with his second goal of the game only 30 seconds later. The two teams traded blows as the first half ticked by but Brayden Fountain would break the stalemate in Army's favor three minutes before the halftime horn with his 25th goal of the season to put Army ahead 6-5 going into the second half.
True to form as a thorn in Army's side, the Terriers notched their sixth goal of the game less than a minute and a half into the second half on an extra-man opportunity after a penalty to Christian Mazur, but Hill Plunkett took Army back into the lead with nine minutes remaining in the quarter. Boston equalized with just over five minutes left to bring the game tied at 7-7 and despite a vicious battle for dominance, the two teams remained tied heading into the final quarter of regulation.
Army came out hot for the fourth quarter, putting up the first two shots of the quarter but the visitors would take the initial edge in the fourth quarter as BU's Andrew Pape notched his fourth goal of the game. Christian Mazur equalized for Army with his first goal of the season after causing a turnover and picking up the resulting ground ball on his own to bring things to an 8-8 tie with five and a half minutes left on the clock.
Boston took the lead a minute later, but the Black Knights refused to give in easily, fighting mulishly for a different result that the last meeting between the two and finding hope as Brayden Fountain capitalized on a scramble in front of the Terriers' net to bring the game tied with just 32 seconds left on the clock. A last second shot from Evan Plunkett was blocked by Boston's defense and for the first time in the 2025 season Army headed into overtime.
Mazur won the overtime opening faceoff for the Black Knights as he picked up the loose ball off the opening scuffle and Army took the first crack at breaking the stalemate, but Hill Plunkett's shot was saved by the Terrier's goalie. The Terriers then went on the attack and made good on their first shot of overtime to claim the first win over Army this season at 10-9.
