No. 21 Women's Lacrosse Suffers First Loss of Season at Colorado

BOULDER, CO – No. 21 Army West Point women's lacrosse (3-1, 0-0) fell by a score of 12-6 at the University of Colorado (1-3, 0-0) on Friday night in Boulder.
In the contest, Army junior midfielder Brigid Duffy set the program record for goals scoring her 132nd career goal in the third quarter. She passed the previous mark of 131 set by Jackie Brattan '21.
Army debuted a new alternate green uniform for the game, honoring the Army club lacrosse teams from 1979-2015 with a patch on the sleeve as the program compete as an NCAA varsity sport for the first time in the spring of 2016.
Army fell behind early 4-0 early and was never able to overcome the early deficit. After trailing 7-1 at the half, Army cut it to a 7-5 game heading into the fourth quarter, but the Buffaloes scored the first five of the fourth quarter to pull away and ensure the victory.
Brigid Duffy and Lily Valentini led the Black Knights with two goals each while Meghan Pedrani (three ground balls, four caused turnovers) and Reilly Sullivan (three ground balls, two caused turnovers) paced the defense.
Duffy added three ground balls and four draw controls to go along with a caused turnover. Lindsey Serafine made eight saves in goal for the Black Knights.
Less than nine minutes into the game, Army found itself trailing 4-0 as the Buffaloes scored on their first four shots on target. At the 6:12 mark in the first, the Black Knights got on the board as Geneva Milch Cesoni finished off a feed from Allison Reilly. The score remained 4-1 into the second quarter.
The teams each went scoreless for the opening 12 minutes of the second quarter, with Serafine making three stops. Colorado would get the next goal to make it 5-1 in the closing two minutes, securing the ensuing draw control twice and scoring twice to make it a 7-1 game at the half. Colorado won 15 of 21 draw in total for the contest.
Army began to mount a comeback in the third, as Valentini opened the scoring with a free-position tally early in the frame before Duffy made it a 7-3 game with 4:00 left in the quarter.
Duffy quickly added another before Kate Gallagher notched a woman-up goal with 11 seconds remaining as the Black Knights suddenly trailed by just two entering the fourth quarter.
Colorado got a pivotal stop to begin the fourth before scoring twice in the opening five minutes, bringing the lead back to 9-5. It ended as an eventual 5-0 run for the Buffaloes who pulled away in the closing minutes with two woman-up goals.
Valentini added her second of the contest with 1:17 remaining, bringing the final scoreline to 12-6.
The Black Knights will look to rebound on Wednesday at Fairfield with opening draw set for 3:00 p.m.
