February 15, 2025 | Softball
COLUMBUS, Ga. – Army West Point softball (5-5, 0-0 Patriot League) claimed back-to-back wins to kick off the second day of the Columbus Classic.
The Black Knights delivered a 2-1 win over the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles before taking down the LIU Sharks 5-4 to complete their sweep on the second day of action in Georgia.
Army earned its two runs against TTU with RBI singles from Sienna Tepley and Samantha Sims that sent Ashton White and Maisi Sigler across home plate in their respective plays.
The Black Knights then dug deep to complete a comeback win against LIU after the Sharks pulled ahead to a 4-0 lead in the second inning with five runs in three consecutive innings.
GAME 1
Army opened the second day of the Columbus Classic looking for redemption after its five-inning loss to Tennessee Tech the previous day.
The two squads refused to give up ground in the early innings as neither team could get a runner further around the base path than second base until the bottom of the fourth.
Army finally broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fourth as Ashton White opened the Black Knights' turn at the plate with a single into center field, advancing to second on a wild pitch during Maisi Sigler's at-bat.
Sigler knocked a single to right field to send White ahead to third base and Sienna Tepley sent White home and Sigler to second base with a single through the right side moments later.
Samantha Sims sent a single towards TTU's shortstop that resulted in an obstruction against the Golden Eagles, advancing all of the runners around the bases and sending Sigler across home plate to extend Army's lead to two.
Tennessee Tech cut Army's lead down to one run in the top of the fifth with two hits in the inning and a trio of ground outs from the Black Knights' infield.
The two defenses duked it out for the remaining innings of action, but strong pitching from Breanna Izzo held off the Golden Eagles and the Black Knights claimed their second win of the weekend.
GAME 2
Much like Army in the Black Knights' first game of the day, LIU jumped out of the gate with a fast paced offense in the second game of the day, picking up two runs with a two RBI home run in the top of the first inning.
A three up, three down inning for Army brought the Sharks back to the plate where they extended their lead to four after a stolen base and wild pitch put a runner in scoring position for the Sharks and an RBI single broke through the Army defense.
The two teams traded blows for a handful of at-bats before Army cut into LIU's lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Taylor Brown drew a walk in the opening at-bat of the frame, advancing to second on a single from Ashton White, and then on to third on an error from LIU's right fielder. Caitlyn Newburn then knocked a sac fly to left field that sent Brown home in the bottom of the fourth to put Army on the board.
After holding the Sharks to a three batter inning in the top of the fifth and working their way back through the batting order, Brown launched a three RBI home run out of the left field wall in the bottom of the fifth for the Black Knights to score after sending Sophie Smith and Maaika Dones over the plate to bring the two teams tied at four runs each.
A third consecutive three up, three down inning for LIU brought Army back to the plate where Maisi Sigler then took Army into the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a deep home run over the center field wall to take Army ahead 5-4.
The Sharks were able to put a runner on base after an error from Army in the left side of the infield but quick work from the Black Knights' defense and a strikeout for Amanda Eaglin secured Army's second win of the day.
