Men’s Lacrosse Cruises to Home Opening Win Over Rutgers

WEST POINT, NY – Army West Point men's lacrosse (2-0) defeated Rutgers (2-2), 9-3 in the home opener at a cold and windy Michie Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Brayden Fountain was the story of the afternoon as the youngster, making his second career start, scored a game-high four goals and assisted on another two goals. Fountain has scored four goals in each of his first two collegiate games, totaling 11 points in the first two games of the new season.
Goalkeeper Sean Byrne had a terrific afternoon, saving 10 shots (.769 save %), four of which came in the opening quarter, helping set the tone for the remainder of the game. Byrne had a career highlight type moment in the second quarter, scoring his first career goal from the other end of the field. Byrne, who was possessing the ball, remained uncovered and fired an across-field missile for the goal to put the Black Knights up 4-0.
Junior attack Gunnar Fellows got Army on the board early with a goal assisted by Ryan Nixon to take a 1-0 lead, a minute and a half into the action.
Fountain, who had his second career hat trick in as many games, scored unassisted after scooping up a ground ball in the first quarter. He then scored three second-half goals, the final three goals of the afternoon for Army on assists from Finn McCullough, Jackson Eicher and Keagan Treacy.
The Black Knights jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Rutgers got on the board with its first goal of the game on goal by Colin Kurdyla, two minutes before halftime.
Rutgers added two more goals later in the fourth quarter.
Another standout freshman for the Black Knights was Aiden Weisenborn. Weisenborn left his mark on the game, scoring on a rocket of a shot with an assist from Fellows early in the second quarter.
The young freshman duo of Fountain and Weisenborn have combined to score 11 goals and tally 14 points through their first two career games.
Also joining in on scoring action today was Eicher, Evan Plunkett.
Army will prepare for a midweek matchup at Yale on Wednesday, February 19, at 1:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
