GAME 1
Army got off to a strong start, holding the Sharks to a three up, three down inning before going on to score three runs in the opening frame.
Taylor Brown earned a single with a hit out to center field, advancing to second base on a quick hit from Ashton White past LIU's shortstop. She then became the first player to score a run in the Columbus Classic as Caitlyn Newburn knocked a single of her own to earn an RBI as Brown crossed home plate.
Maisi Sigler advanced White to third base and Newburn to second when she was hit by a pitch and a deep double from Sienna Tepley sent the duo home to push Army up to a 3-0 lead.
A pitching change from LIU saw the Black Knights sent away as Sam Rodgers struck out and Annie Christiana popped up a ball to third base.
Army's defense stood tall in the top of the second, holding off a bases-loaded opportunity for LIU with a big move from Leila Hurst at first base to bring the Black Knights back into the batter's box.
After a strikeout for Samantha Sims, Army jumped right back on the offensive with Hurst ripping a home run out of left-center field to put the squad up 4-0. The Black Knights put two more runners on base as Brown batted a single past LIU's shortstop and White was hit by a pitch and Newburn sent them home in short order with a homer of her own out of left field to extend Army's lead to 7-0.
Back-to-back strikeouts for the Black Knights ended their turn at the plate, but the squad shored up their defenses and held LIU to three batters in three of the remaining five innings of action to claim their second shutout victory of the season.
GAME 2
Army turned its attention to the fresh Tennessee Tech team for the second game of the day and the Golden Eagles made their mark early as Abby Shoulders singled to Army's left field and was sent home on a single from Jailynn Paderez.
Army put three runners on base in the bottom of the first, beginning when Hurst doubled down the left field line to open Army's turn at the plate, followed by Brown and White after Hurst was put out during Brown's single.
The two teams then entered a stalemate as the squads held each other to five or fewer batters until Tennessee Tech found a break in the top of the fourth.
A single followed by a wild pitch put a TTU runner on second base who then advanced to third on a second Golden Eagles single in the top of the fourth inning. TTU's lead runner was then sent home on a single towards third base.
The Golden Eagles earned their next run after a walk loaded the bases and a second consecutive walk advances the runners around to put TTU up 3-0. A high-flying ball to center field gave Tennessee Tech's runners enough time to advance around the bases and put the visitors ahead 4-0 going into the bottom of the inning.
A three up, three down inning brought the Golden Eagles back to the plate but Army's defense held strong against the first two batters. A series of errors from the Black Knights saw the Golden Eagles rapidly extend their lead to a 9-0 advantage with five unearned runs crossing home plate.
The Black Knights sought to cut the deficit with a single from Maaika Dones but the Golden Eagles flexed their defensive prowess and sent Army off in the bottom of the fifth for a run-rule victory.
