KINGSTON, ONTARIO – Army West Point hockey (11-15-0, 11-8-0 Atlantic Hockey America) retained the Challenge Cup in the 86th meeting between Army and the Royal Military College of Canada (1-22) with a 3-2 victory over the Paladins on Saturday afternoon in Kingston, Ontario.
Army improved to 49-30-7 in the all-time series as the win moved head coach Brian Riley to 11-1-1 all-time against the Paladins. The Black Knights have now won back-to-back meetings following a hiatus in the series from 2021-2023.
Army jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Paladins battled back to make it a 3-2 game midway through the second period.
Dylan Wegner, Adam Marshall and Barron Woodring each deposited goals for the Black Knights while Evan Szary made 18 saves in net to pick up the win.
The Black Knights wasted no time opening the scoring, as Dylan Wegner fired home a one-timer just 63 seconds in off a feed from Michael Sacco.
There were a myriad of penalties and extracurriculars to open the contest, totaling 14 penalties through the opening 20 minutes, with both sides have multiple chances with the man-advantage.
Army doubled its lead on the power-play later in the period, as Adam Marshall deflected in a shot from Pierce Patterson at the blue line as the Black Knights took the 2-0 lead into the first intermission after outshooting the Paladins 19-6 in the opening frame.
Army opened the second period with a second power play goal as Barron Woodring was set up with a one-timer out in front off a pass from Nils Forselius. The goal came 3:24 into the period as Army led by three goals before the Paladins found life.
It was two goals in three minutes which got RMC back into the game, with Brent Broaders and Mathieu Hebert tabbing goals at even strength. Army continued to dominate possession, outshooting the Padalins 16-9 in the period, as the sides went into the third with a 3-2 scoreline.
After just two penalties in the second period, the teams remained committed to staying out of the box, as the third period saw five-on-five action throughout, with the Paladins unable to pull their goaltender Michael Davis in the closing moments.
The Black Knights held their lead firm in the third, holding the Paladins to just five shots on Szary while peppering Davis 13 more times.
Army outshot the Paladins 48-20 in total for the game and held the lead for 58:57 of the contest to retain the Challenge Cup.
Army will turn around and travel to Bentley for a single game on Tuesday night in Waltham, Mass., with puck drop set for 7:00 p.m.
