December 28, 2025 | Hockey
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Army West Point Hockey (6-9-5, 2-8-3 Atlantic Hockey America) closed out their schedule for the 2025 calendar year with a contest against the LIU Sharks (7-10-1, Independent) in Brooklyn. The Black Knights opened up to a 4-2 lead in the third but a pair of late goals from the Sharks brought things even to send the game to overtime and on to a shootout where the Sharks got one past Army.
Army's 20th game of the season saw the Black Knights venture into the Big Apple to take on Long Island University on Sunday night as the final days of 2025 drew near.
JJ Cataldo took to the ice for his 17th game of the season where he put up 38 saves for Army.
At the other end of the rink, LIU placed Daniel Duris in goal where he tallied 23 saves against the Black Knights.
The two teams hit the ground running with a shot on goal for each within the first 70 seconds of action, but the Sharks utilized their home-ice advantage to score first at the six-and-a-half-minute mark.
After another pair of saves for Cataldo and the first period media timeout, Army evened the score as Brent Keefer combined with Nils Forselius and Ben Ivey on a rush to score his third goal of the season with nine minutes remaining in the period.
The Black Knights took their first lead of the night with just over a minute and a half left on the clock as Jack Ivey struck after a rush from Adam Marshall dropped back to Ivey's stick for the sophomore forward to put Army ahead 2-1 heading into the break.
LIU wasted no time in erasing Army's lead as they notched a power play goal just 82 seconds into the second period.
Army rallied hard to regain their advantage and Nik Hong found the back of the net next for the Black Knights as he scored a power play goal for Army at 8:46 in the second period after quickly collecting and finishing a rebound from Vincent Salice.
Feeding off of Hong's momentum, Brent Keefer scored his second goal of the night less than two minutes later as he interrupted a pass in LIU's zone and quickly fired off a shot that found the back of the net.
LIU battled back for control of the game, fighting their way to a third goal with a minute and a half left in the period to cut Army's lead to one.
The third period was fraught with tension as Army fought to maintain their advantage and the Sharks sought to erase the deficit.
An impressive set of saves from JJ Cataldo held Army ahead throughout 18 and a half minutes of the third period until LIU pulled their goalie to send out an extra attacker where the home team found paydirt with the man-advantage to bring things tied at four each.
Army dominated control of the puck in the overtime period with six shots on goal to LIU's two, but the score held at 4-4 through the five-minute period to send the game to a shootout.
LIU scored in the first round and despite Army's best efforts, their goal stood alone throughout the following rounds of the shootout.
