WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point men's basketball (3-7) two-game winning streak was snapped on Tuesday, with the George Washington Revolutionaries (7-2), handing Army its second third loss at Christl Arena this season, 70-84.
The game marked the 16th matchup between the two programs, with George Washington now holding an 11-5 series lead. Army still remains winless over GW since the 1970-71 season.
Four Black Knights finished the game in double-digits. Jaxson Bell led the way with 15 points, with Ryan Curry also adding 14 points. Jacen Holloway and Jackson Furman were the other Black Knights who finished in double-digits.
How It Happened
Army started its scoring at 18:15, with Army taking a 3-2 lead when Ryan Curry drilled a three off a kickout from McCarthy. One minute later, Tate Laczkowski added a transition layup at 17:43, pulling the Black Knights back ahead at 5–4.
Army regained the lead again at 17:03 when Holloway knocked down a catch-and-shoot three from Curry, making it 8–7 in Army's favor. After a defensive rebound from Curry, Army regrouped through an early substitution pattern that brought in Jackson Furman and Jaxson Bell, both of whom quickly made an offensive impact.
At 15:12, Furman buried a left-wing three to push Army ahead 11–9, and after a brief scoring lull, he added a layup at 12:34 to cut the deficit back to 13–14. Moments later, Furman continued his hot stretch with another three at 12:11, giving Army a 16–14 advantage.
Army's perimeter shooting stayed sharp as rotations continued. At 10:01, Bell stepped into a rhythm three off a feed from Laczkowski, to regain a 19-18. Two minutes later and after a 6-0 run from GW, McCarthy fired in a transition three at 8:52 from Curry, inching Army closer, making the score 22–24.
Army evened things again at 7:58, when Jorn Everson muscled in a layup to bring the game to 24–24. The Black Knights kept fighting through the mid-half back-and-forth, with Holloway cleaning up the glass and helping stabilize Army's defense.
At 5:16, Bell knocked down his second three-pointer of the half off a pass from Joshua Eli, bringing Army back within two points. Two minutes later, the offense continued to answer when Furman connected on his third three of the half at 2:53, keeping Army close at 32-35.
Army kept chipping away, and Holloway scored on a tough layup at 2:03, trimming GW's lead to 37–34. With under a minute left, Army struck again from deep: McCarthy drilled a clutch three at 0:33 off a Curry assist to pull Army within 42–37 heading into the locker room.
Army opened the second half by rotating in Kevin McCarthy, Tate Laczkowski, and Jorn Everson, looking to spark the offense after trailing 45–39. McCarthy immediately generated a second-chance opportunity with an offensive rebound at 19:34, and just seconds later, Army struck first: Jorn Everson buried a smooth jumper at 19:16 off a setup from Jacen Holloway, cutting the deficit to 45–41.
Moments later, Army delivered an early jolt. At 18:53, Ryan Curry drilled a deep three from the right wing off a feed from Laczkowski, pulling Army within 45–42 and forcing GW into a timeout.
Everson got another clean look from three at 18:11, and although it didn't fall, Army kept generating rhythm looks. But GW responded with a three of its own, pushing the margin to 48–42 at 17:51, before Tate Laczkowski's drive on the next trip resulted in a turnover.
After a pair of free throws pushed Army behind 50–42, the Knights answered immediately. At 16:54, Joshua Eli stepped into a confident catch-and-shoot three from Curry to trim the score to 50–45. Curry then grabbed a defensive board, and Army pushed the tempo again before another McCarthy three narrowly missed.
Army's defense held strong as Jackson Furman came up with a block at 16:22, but the Colonials added a layup shortly after to make it 52–45. Army found another answer at 15:37, when Jaxson Bell shook loose on the left wing and buried a three off Eli's assist, keeping Army within 52–48.
Despite a GW layup extending the gap to 54–48, Army struck back with interior scoring. Rafael Castro, working in traffic, powered home a layup at 14:17 to make it 56–48, and then Bell countered again at 14:04, finishing through contact to cut the deficit to 56–50 after a pass from Holloway.
GW momentarily stretched the margin to 58–50, prompting an Army timeout at 13:34. Coming out of the break, the Knights continued to attack the glass. Laczkowski grabbed a defensive rebound at 13:11 before Army suffered a turnover at 12:47. Another GW bucket pushed Army behind 60–50, but once more the Knights answered. At 11:35, Bell drilled his third three of the half, assisted by Furman, cutting the score to 60–53.
GW made free throws to go up 62–53, but Army stayed aggressive from deep. Everson answered again at 10:10, burying a three from the top of the arc off Curry's feed to keep Army within 65–56. At 9:01, Curry got loose off a McCarthy kick-out and canned another three to pull Army to 66–59, keeping the game within striking distance.
Army continued to compete possession by possession. At 8:05, Holloway knocked down a mid-range jumper, drew a foul, and hit the free throw to complete the three-point play, tightening the margin to 68–62. Army's defense followed with multiple stops, including rebounds by McCarthy (7:39) and Curry (7:18), but several clean perimeter looks—three straight threes from McCarthy and Furman—rimmed out as Army continued searching for a push.
GW briefly extended its lead at the free-throw line to 71–62, and Army again battled to generate offense. A series of extra-effort offensive rebounds by Eli and McCarthy gave the Knights more opportunities, and at 5:41, Curry made them count—drilling yet another three, this time off a setup from Bell, trimming the deficit to 72–65.
As the clock ticked under five minutes, Army forced turnovers at 4:52 and again at 4:35, with Holloway pulling down a defensive board at 4:21 to keep Army alive. Bell drew a foul at 3:49 and split a pair, bringing Army within 74–66.
Curry later went 2-for-2 at the stripe at 2:30, inching Army back to 77–68, and Bell added a steal at 2:12 to give Army another shot. Holloway converted a late layup at 1:46 off a Curry assist to make it 79–70, but Army's final threes couldn't fall in the closing minute.
The Knights battled through the final possessions—forcing a turnover at 00:29—but the late push wasn't enough as the clock expired.
