WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point linebacker Andon Thomas has been selected as a finalist for the 2025 William V. Campbell Trophy, college football's premier scholar-athlete award that annually recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance, and exemplary leadership. The award is often referred to as the "Academic Heisman."
From a pool of 180 candidates nationwide, Thomas has been selected as one of 16 finalists for the Campbell Trophy, the nation's premier scholar-athlete award.
Thomas, a senior from Liberty Hill, Texas, is a team captain this season and is leading the Army defense in tackles with 59 through seven games.
Army joins Notre Dame, Texas, and Oregon as the only universities to produce two or more Campbell Trophy finalists over the last three seasons. Linebacker Leo Lowin was a finalist in 2023.
Last season, Thomas earned All-American Conference Third Team honors after starting all 14 games at linebacker. He led the team in total tackles (98), solo tackles (48), and assisted tackles (50), while also recording 3.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, and four passes defended.
Academically, Thomas was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America First Team in 2024. He boasts a 3.98 GPA while majoring in chemical engineering and is particularly interested in applying engineering principles to Army technology development. Following graduation, Thomas plans to pursue advanced studies in chemical engineering, conduct research to support the Army's technical challenges, and eventually return to West Point as a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry and Life Science.
The 16 finalists will each receive a $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2025 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments®.
The finalists and the winner will be honored at the 67th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Presented by Las Vegas, where their accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports.
Following the 67th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Presented by Las Vegas, the recipient of the 2025 Campbell Trophy® will be honored at several other prestigious events.
