WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's soccer team was unable to hold off a fury of second half goals by Holy Cross en route to a 3-2 loss at Malek Stadium on Saturday night.
Army (4-5-5) led 1-0 at halftime but Holy Cross (4-6-5) got three second half goals off the foot of Archie Hatcher, including two in the final 13 minutes, to stun the Black Knights and earn a massive Patriot League victory.
The Black Knights came out strong in the opening 45 minutes and seemed to be in complete control. Freshman Jack De Simone opened the scoring in the 20th minute off a beautiful pass from fellow freshman Nicholas Berardi. The goal was De Simone's second of the season and first non-penalty kick goal of his career.
While Army wasn't able to add to its lead before halftime, it carried all the momentum going into the locker room.
That momentum carried over into the second half as Riley Cullum scored 23 seconds in the final 45 minutes. It's his second career goal and second in his last three games. The Black Knights seemed on the brink of blowing the game open but didn't find the back of the net the rest of the night.
Hatcher got the Crusaders on the board in the 61st minute on an unassisted goal. Sixteen minutes later, Hatcher scored his second of the night to level the score at 2-2.
Holy Cross now had all the momentum and were dominating time of possession. With less than three minutes to play, Hatcher completed the hat trick on an unassisted goal to give the Crusaders the lead.
Alaistar Hafner Schnee made two saves in the victory and moved to 1-1-2 on the season. Blair Camargo got his second start of the season for Army, making three saves. He is 0-2-0 in 2025.
The Black Knights finished the game with six total shots – four on goal – while Holy Cross had 10 and six on target. The Crusaders outshot Army 7-3 in the second half.
Holy Cross won the corner kick battle 5-2.
Prior to the game on Saturday, Army honored its senior class of Sean Adu-Gyamfi, Jack Drabenstott, Niko Kapustin, Jacob Lee, Eric Lusskin and Jack Meyer.
Coaches Corner – Head coach Brian Plotkin
"Credit to Holy Cross. They imposed their will on us. It affected us. Credit to them, they were the team that lived in their identity with more belief, and that's why the result went the way it did… We've got everything to play for. It's a competitive league. What I want to see is our leadership, our competitive fight. I just want to see some of our players step up. I think that's my biggest thing."
