Men’s Soccer Plays Columbia to a 2-2 Draw
October 14, 2025 | Men's Soccer
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's soccer team got off to a blazing start but was unable to hold off a second-half comeback by Columbia, resulting in a 2-2 draw at Malek Stadium on Tuesday night.
Army (4-4-5) scored a pair of goals in the opening 12 minutes and seemed to be on its way to back-to-back victories for the first time since early September. However, Columbia (1-5-4), found its groove in the closing 35 minutes and scored a pair of goals to secure a point.
Junior defender Kelly Cooper opened the scoring in the fourth minute with his second goal of the season. The Black Knights free kick bounced off bodies inside the box before Cooper settled it with his right foot and fired it home. It was the fastest goal scored by Army this season.
Nine minutes later, Jubril Bamgbala scored his fifth goal of the season in the 12th minute to double the Army lead. The goal came off a great pass by Nicholas Berardi, who know has two assists on the year. It was Bamgbala's third goal in the last three games after he scored two in the Army-Navy Cup last Friday in Philadelphia.
Despite trailing 2-0, the Lions seemed to gain control of the game for the last 30 minutes of the first half but were unable to tally a goal going into the locker room. The Lions had four shots in the opening half – none on target – while the Black Knights had six total shots and four on goal.
Columbia came out strong in the closing half and cut the Army lead in half in the 56 minute on a goal by Andrew Hilton II, which was assisted by Jack McDaid. The Lions first goal completely flipped the momentum in their favor. The majority of the second half was spent with Army playing in its defensive zone.
The Columbia pressure paid off in the 81st minute, as Andres Garcia converted on a shot at the top of the box to level the score at 2-2. Neither team had much of a good look after that and the game ended with both teams securing a point.
Army finished the night with 10 shots on goal compared to Columbia's eight but both sides had four shots on goal. The Lions had 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Army goalkeeper Michael Guiry made a pair of saves and moves to 4-2-4 on the season. For Columbia, Alexander O'Brien made two saves and is now 0-1-1 in 2025.
The Black Knights played without two of their captains, as Owen Ennis and Jack Meyer were unavailable.
