Softball Defeats Colgate
May 03, 2024 | Softball
HOW IT HAPPENED
Army struggled to find hits in the initial innings. Colgate's starting pitcher, Bailey Misen, and the Colgate defense, held Army hitless through the first two innings.
However, Colgate swiftly gained momentum. In the first inning, Adrienne Nardone of Colgate doubled to left field, scoring first.
Continuing their momentum into the second inning, Colgate added two more runs with RBI singles, extending their lead to 3-0.
In the third inning, with two outs, Mikayla Klepfer and Kayla Edwards secured the first hits for the Black Knights, sparking hope for Army. Ashton White then singled to right field, bringing both Klepfer and Edwards home, narrowing the lead to one.
Army's defense held off the Raiders from scoring in the bottom of the third and carried their momentum into the fourth.
Tying the score in the fourth inning, Lauren Little attempted to steal second, and Caitlyn Newburn dashed home.
However, Colgate answered fiercely. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Niamh Dougherty homered to left field, putting Colgate back in the lead, 4-3.
But Army swiftly retaliated. In the top of the fifth inning, Edwards scored on a wild pitch, tying the game once again. Then, Lauren Little's single to right field gave Army their first lead, making it 5-4.
Pitching a flawless 1,2,3 inning in the top of the fifth, Breanna Izzo maintained Army's lead.
While Army's scoring slowed in the bottom of the sixth, they picked up again in the bottom of the seventh. Julia Farris walked, scoring Edwards. Then, Ellie Caldwell singled to left field, scoring Ashton White. To cap off the inning, Sam Bocis hit a ball to center field, scoring Newburn, bringing the Black Knights to an 8-4 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
Izzo and the defense held Colgate from scoring in the bottom of the seventh, securing the victory for Army, 8-4.
