Softball Drops Series to Lehigh

WEST POINT, N.Y.- The Army West Point softball team (12-34, 7-8 PTL) fell to Lehigh (29-15, 14-1 PTL) in the Sunday rubber match, 5-3.
The Mountain Hawks began strong in the first inning, scoring three runs and prompting Army to make a pitching change.
The Black Knights didn't respond until the sixth inning, but Army's pitcher Breanna Izzo and the defense held off Lehigh until the top of the fifth.
Lehigh added two more runs with an RBI double from Holly Lovett.
Entering the sixth inning, the Black Knights showed resilience. Ashton White's two-run home run, scoring herself and Kaya Edwards, cut the deficit to three.
Building on the momentum, Caitlyn Newburn hit her second home run of the series, bringing the score to 5-3 going into the seventh.
In the seventh inning, Izzo and the defense prevented any hits or runs. However, Lehigh's relief pitcher, Maria Urban, and their defense secured a 1-2-3 inning, clinching the victory, 5-3.

The Black Knights will face St. Johns at home this Wednesday in their final game of the 2024 season. The doubleheader begins at 3:00 PM.
